Re: Where is everyone ... new imac .. mac pro ... and mini

Time Capsule is also a wireless router, ethernet hub and allows for wireless printing.

It's also worth noting that Apple is continuing to make good on their commitment to be greener - the newer models, even the mini, use fewer toxic substances, are more energy efficient and are recyclable. I wonder how many cheaper PCs can make that claim? The mini or iMac save money on utility bills too. I know HP and Dell, etc. have agreed to be more green, but what have they actually done, especially on entry-level models?

The iMac uses laptop components, and there are no Core 2 Quad laptop chips.

Ignoring the fact, Apple has user replaceable batteries on their low end laptops...

I'm relatively careful myself but I'm more likely to properly dispose of or recycle a standalone product than a part.

Actually the iMac technically uses a mix of Laptop & Desktop Parts.

Re: Where is everyone ... new imac .. mac pro ... and mini

I doubt the current design of the iMac could tolerate a quad. The temperature of the air exiting a 2.8ghz 24in is simply astonishing. A quad might actually require adequate cooling and we all know Steve aint about that.
iMacs might be more energy efficient but I wouldn't count on that offsetting the shorter life span from internal heat stress.
The pricing on the Mini is kinda odd. It's not like Apple to make the lower end model of anything the better deal but here we are.
Does the fact that there is a mini dvi and a mini display port mean a Mini can drive two screens now?
That would interest me.

According to Apple: "Mac mini even lets you connect up to two displays, including your TV, with the mini-DVI port and Mini DisplayPort." & "Extended desktop and video mirroring"

Max Display on Mini-DisplayPort: Apple 30 studio display or equivalent using Mini-DisplayPort to Dual Link DVI adaptor.
Max Display on Mini-DVI: 1920*1200 Display using Mini-DVI to DVI or Mini-DVI to VGA adaptor.

Comes with "Mini-DVI to DVI Adapter"

Optional Adaptors from Apple: Mini-DisplayPort to Dual Link DVI, Mini-DisplayPort to DVI, Mini-DisplayPort to VGA, Mini-DVI to DVI Mini-DVI to VGA, & Mini-DVI to Video

Third Party Adaptors: Mini-DVI to HDMI
Forthcoming Adaptors: Mini-DisplayPort to HDMI

That doesn't mean squat. If the cooling system is efficient enough, you bet that air's gonna be hot: all that heat was transferred to it from your CPU and GPU. Meaning they run nice 'n' cool.

My experience repairing Macs leads me to believe otherwise.
Apple's iMac design pushes right up against Intel's maximum recommended temperature specification. It is axiomatic that a given piece of electronics will last longer given a cooler life cycle.

Be that as it may; the exhaust air temperature is not a proper way of determining the CPU junction temperature.

On a positive note, I am pretty happy to see dual monitor support on the Mini. That was a huge barrier to entry for me.

Re: Where is everyone ... new imac .. mac pro ... and mini

It has Firewire, albeit, I'll need an adaptor. But at least that is cool as it can be used for small "real" vid projects. Graphics is way better.  I plan on getting one for my kids. (My 12" 1GHz PowerBook slaved via firewire boot attached to a 20.5" monitor just isn't cutting it anymore with more demanding game play websites - non-playable = taking my MBP = unacceptable)

*now lets bitch* But Apple could have made some sort or good faith cut here, if more symbolic than sincere. Say $25/$50 off their bottom line? (But that might mean job cuts?) As others have pointed out, there is no keyboard or mouse, not to mention a web cam. Its just a square box of components really. No real design changes of note.

$6.12 until Friday and then the black 6' ones will get restocked, dropping the price back down to $4.48.

Yeah, I know, just saying. Probably end up buying at an Apple Store out of mere convenience. I don't really care at all about that. I'm just happy they kept the DVI and miniport all there. I was praying for that. If they ax the DVI it better be for HDMI.

It's roughly equivalent to an 8600GT, so definitely better. It will also have it's own VRAM which is nice. It's not a screamer by any stretch of the imagination, but whether or not that level of performance is adequate is rather subjective...

Actually while the specs for HDMI standard have equivalent resolution to dual link DVI & DisplayPort (including Mini-Display), there a not yet any commercial HDMI hardware implementations which can handle handle more than single link DVI resolutions and HDMI's other big draw (audio) is handled separately on computers and computer monitors.

Re: Where is everyone ... new imac .. mac pro ... and mini

Nice to see a Mini I would actually recommend now. But i'm curious on the real world tests as has no on board VRAM.

Do think it was a bad move to suddenly go with all nVidia for stock rigs. Their new number schemes will confuse folks.

Then theres prices also. Things have been too high since the Intel switch and it's never come down, even with the economy as it is. Was expecting Apple to finally get back to the prices they had in the G5 days with this revision, but looks like they need more gold butt scratchers.

Really how much longer can Apple ride out this image fad with Apple goods? All M$ has to do is finally get their Windows right.

You're correct in that All M$ has to do is finally get their Windows right, but somehow I just cant help but read it in the same context as all scientists need to do is make a fusion reaction sustainable.

Re: Where is everyone ... new imac .. mac pro ... and mini

To be fair, Dells AIO is about the same cost as the iMac - though it does have quad core. In addition to MS fixing Windows, PC manufacturers need to come up with more compelling designs to completely unseat Apple. Few make anything like the mini. Also, the market is trending more and more toward laptops anyway - an area where Apple does well because design matters more.

I've played with the Win 7 beta and while it's an improvement over Vista (what wouldn't be?), it's not going to unseat Leopard anytime soon. Ultimately you use the best tool - hardware and software - for the job. For gamers, that is a Windows box hands-down. Apple can't compete in that market very well, so they go for other areas of the market and that seems to be working for them.
