New AirPort Questions

The new dual band AirPort base station that came out the other day seems neat but I was wondering if the Dual band feature supports a WDS network setup? I have an 802.11b/g AirPort Extreme and 802.11b/g Express set up in WDS now with the Extreme serving as the main and the Express as a remote.
If I got the new Dual Band Extreme and used it as my main than set the b/g Extreme as a remote and the b/g Express as a relay, would the dual band mode still work for n enabled devices if they are in range of the main or will the WDS setup disable dual band mode and keep the network as b/g only?

Also I was originally looking at the new time capsule to get, but the new dual band extreme + an external 500GB drive is cheaper than the 500GB time capsule. So my other question is Remote Time Machine (Assuming it is still a feature on the new extremes, can someone verify?) & WDS = Fail or not?

Re: New AirPort Questions

From Apple's own description of the new dual-band AirPort Extreme Base Station it will automatically slow down to accommodate the slowest protocol on your network, so: no, it will not use one band in 11g mode and the other in 11n mode.

On the Time Capsule I have nothing to say except that you are likely to get an external hard drive that is cheaper than a Time Capsule (which, after all, does have a wireless connection as well).

I think the exact order of your AirPort routers matters very little so you can connect them in whatever order is most convenient to you.

Apple provides no explanation for the use of the USB port on the Apple TV so I suspect that it is NOT usuable as a printer port (if it were then Apple likely would say so). While they can connect wirelessly, it does not appear that Apple TV or Time Capsule can be used as relays/bridges in your WiFi network--they appear to be only end points.

Simultaneous dual-band support. Some Wi-Fi devices use the 2.4GHz wireless band, including iPhone, iPod touch, and devices using 802.11b/g. Other devices can use either 2.4GHz or the higher-speed 5GHz band, such as the latest 802.11n-based Mac computers and Apple TV. Instead of choosing one of the bands, AirPort Extreme now operates simultaneously on both bands, and your multiband devices automatically use the best available band. This means all your Wi-Fi devices get the fastest possible wireless performance and the best possible range.

I read the opposite in that passage. To me it implies that if you have a slow device on 2.4Ghz It won't effect the devices on 5Ghz

Re: New AirPort Questions

Hi.  I have the new dual band Time Capule.  I have found that it's range is somewhat less than my previous Linksys setup.  So, I bought an Airport Express hoping to improve the range of the Time Capule router.  As a bonus I thought I could also hook it up to my stereo and transmit iTunes music.  Both the TC and the AE are N capable but most of my devices are G.   Both have the latest firmware.  From what I can gather I need to set the AE in Relay Mode to repeat the signal from the router.  This is where I am having a problem.  When I go into WDS settings it asks me for the Apple ID/Mac address that I want to relay.  Since it is a dual band router it has two addresses.  I chose the primary address since I believe that if I chose the guest network it won't be able to access my iMac and iTunes.  This means that all my other G devices will have to be on the primary band as well (in order to take advantage of the relay mode).  So, I suppose whatever advantages of the Time Capsule being N capable will be lost in this setup.  I have been running the dual band router in "automatic" mode which lets it select the best broadcast channel but the AE wants me to choose a channel from 1-11 for relay purposes so I suppose I will have to force the router to only broadcast on one of these channels.  This will also limit it to G.  Anyway, after choosing Relay Mode, supplying the mac address and changing the channel to "1" the AE dropped off my list of networked devices and started blinking with the amber LED.

Does anyone have a suggesting as to how to best do what I am trying to accomplish withing this dual band framework?  BTW my modem is set in bridge mode and the Time Capule is providing the IP addresses.  Thanks in advance for any ideas/suggestions.
