Can't Search Servers with Spotlight?
Hi. I've been having a problem for a while now. I can't seem to search for files on my servers. Spotlight in Leopard always shows nothing.
I remember in earlier versions of OS X you could select specifically which server(s) to search. Is this still possible? I feel stupid because I just can't get it to work.
Thanks so much for any help. I have done a bunch of searching online and have come up with nothing.

Re: Can't Search Servers with Spotlight?
Hey,
I've been having the same problem and can't seem to find an answer online. Did you ever figure it out? Does anyone out there have an answer? We are running older 10.3 servers and just updated our macs to 10.5 and now spotlight can't search the servers. Whats the deal?

Re: Can't Search Servers with Spotlight?
Sorry, I haven't found a solution at all! My servers are 10.4 and I can't search them in 10.5.

Re: Can't Search Servers with Spotlight?
Occasionally, users find that Spotlight search will not work on their external hard drives. This can often happen because Spotlight needs to reindex the drive....
To have Spotlight reindex your hard drive follow these steps provide by MacFixIt "MacWizard" jchuzi:
"You may want to have Spotlight re-index the drive. Go to System Preferences>Spotlight and select Privacy. Drag the hard drive icon into the Privacy pane and drop it there. Then, select it and click - to remove it from Privacy. Within a few moments, Spotlight will commence re-indexing the drive."

Thanks, Nefarious.
Thing is, this isn't an external drive, it's a file server. I don't believe you want every machine on a network indexing the drives on a server.

Re: Can't Search Servers with Spotlight?
i've found one way to get it working.
requirements : osxserver 10.5.6 / client : 10.5.6
on the server, remove your share and re-create the same share. A spotlight user will be added in the ACL.
Now select : Make entries explicit and then edit the spotlight user.
for the spotlight user, check "READ" option
save your share and propagate permissions.

My server is only 10.4
And each user has to index the server drives? Isn't that a bit much? That wasn't necessary in 10.4. We were able to specifically search a server.
I'm still quite confused, but thanks for the info.
