Hi everyone I haven't been around much lately, but I can always depend on you guys when I need you. The good news is that I found out I am pregnant. It's our first and we are so happy.....and a little nervous. The bad news is I've had a bad deep cough since the end of Jan. The docs say to drink hot tea with honey, and have chicken soup. After a month of soup and tea I'm sick of them both and not any better.

In about 2 weeks I can take some otc cough syrup which has always worked about as well as the hot tea and honey. Any other suggestions that won't hurt baby but will finally rid me of this horrid cough?

A bad cough shouldn't last this long, any idea on what is causing it.

Go out in the cold air, and then go sit in the bathroom with the shower as hot as it can go- steam! Get lots of rest, but don't forget the exercise- I recommend yoga.

Other than that, I'm with the docs on the soup and tea, and would avoid otc cough syrup while pregnant. But that's just me. Make sure you're taking your prenatals. Congrats! When are you due?

As for the cough it is odd that it lasting this long
All I can suggest is maybe some OJ who knows the vitamin C might help

The vitamin C WILL help. Lots of it.

Your body only absorbs as much vitamin C as it can in a day and you pee out the rest. Don't nuke yourself with massive amounts of it, it's pointless and a waste of money.

Congratulations and I hope you have an otherwise uneventful pregnancy!

But....

Please do not ask for medical advice (except in the most generic cases) in places like this forum. There may be some people here with actual medical degrees here--I am NOT one of them--but I think all would agree that they would refuse to give medical advice without substantially more information (such that you likely would not want it to be revealed anywhere public) AND without being able to see you directly. Even though most (if not all) people here will be well-meaning and best-intentioned, that doesn't preclude them from giving bad advice.

As to your cough: it is fairly common for people to develop allergies especially when undergoing substantial life changes. It may be that this is the form of "morning sickness" that your pregnancy has taken so that instead of having episodes of vomiting the biology of your nose and throat has been upset. In either case it may just be a matter of time for your body to rework itself into your new situation.

In any case: PLEASE run any advice you get from anywhere in front of your obstetrician before trying it. Even things as seemingly innocuous as megadosing on vitamin C can have complications.

Are you sure it was whiskey and honey while she was pregnant? Or was it while you were growing up?

I always find codiene cough syrup to be great for clearing up a bad cough.

(obviously you shouldn't take it, as its a narcotic) tongue

My dad's been taking a lot of Vidocin. Some of his doctors worry that he will will get hooked, others look at his age (76) and seem to think it doesn't matter too much, it's better that he is comfortable.

He's in the hospital this week getting his lungs drained, I welcome the respite.

I dread dealing with his return, though, and find myself wanting to ask the doc if he needs further rehab...

Dammit.

I wasn't looking for medical advice as much as I was just a good old fashioned home remmody. Of course I would talk to the regular doc before I try anything too far fetched. This cough is something I have had numerous times in the past so I have yet to discover why I cannot rid myself from coughs without the aid of things like codine. That is of course out of the question being pregnant.

I'm due sometime in early October I do hope to rid myself of this cough before then or I may cough the kid out when it gets bigger.

A suggestion was acupuncture I think I'll try it I'm kind of desperate. The man has been practicing for over 50 years and studies western medicine as well. My friend has gone to him for years and trusts him.
