Mac Mini WiFi booster: ethernet or USB?
I have a Mac mini that is the bane of my existence. Evidently the mini's airport card is either less powerful or the case shields it. The mini's computer's connection to my Extreme Base Station network is intermittent and slow; I can put my MacBook Pro next to the mini and it gets a fine, fast connection.
So my question is how do I boost the mini's signal? I was thinking of getting a WiFi receiver with an ethernet connection and using the mini's ethernet to bypass the Airport card entirely. But I think it's going to have to be a non-Apple product, because the Airport Express base station's ethernet is for the cable modem and not for connecting another computer to the network.
Or should I look at one of the USB network connectors on the market, assuming one is made for the Mac?
Thanks for your help and recommendations.

Re: Mac Mini WiFi booster: ethernet or USB?
Michael... I would consider running ethernet jacks to the room with the mini or purchasing a set of AC network extenders. The AC network extenders that I am using are from Netgear and they have worked reliably for over a year. In the past I have use a pair of wireless access points to extend my network, but I recommend the simpler and more reliable solutions above. The Netgear AC network extenders can encrypt network traffic sent over the AC lines!

Re: Mac Mini WiFi booster: ethernet or USB?
Jeff,
Quite some time ago I tried the Actiontec MegaPlug 85Mb Powerline extenders and had no luck getting them to work. (A miserable product, BTW, with no tech support and Buy.com was completely uncooperative). Was the setup for the Netgear product simple? Once burned, twice cautious...

Re: Mac Mini WiFi booster: ethernet or USB?
Michael... I had no problem configuring the Netgear AC extenders. Now I cannot remember if I used a PC to set up the Netgear extenders. So if you have access to a PC with an ethernet adapter I THINK you should have no problem setting up the Netgear AC extenders. I chose to use encryption which ? simply required installing the same password for both devices. Once set up I have not had to do anything to the AC extenders despite many power outages. I use the AC extenders to extend my network from one floor with the internet modem/wireless/wired/router/kabob to the next floor with a wired switch.

Jeff,
What kind of ethernet cable is required for these extenders?
I don't have access to a PC, though..

Re: Mac Mini WiFi booster: ethernet or USB?
Michael... Do you have access to someone with a PC? As long as you have access to a PC with an ethernet port you should be able to configure the Netgear AC adaper using the supplied PC configuration utility. So, ideally, you need a friend who will let you install the configuration utility on their PC. I suspect the AC adapters will work straight out of the box. Here is a users guide.

Note that these babies do not work on extension cord outlet boxes. You need to plug them directly into the wall outlet. You can just use the standard ethernet cables that you normally use on a Mac. No cross over cables required.

Re: Mac Mini WiFi booster: ethernet or USB?
You might want to find a usb wifi card that is mac compatible. They *typically* have better range and some of them you can use an external antenna.
2.66Ghz QuadCore-Nehalem w/24"LED CD ---2.2Ghz BlackMB---15" 2.4Ghz MBP(work)
Dual 2.3Ghz G5 (4G Ram, 2x 250G HD)(10.5 server)--- 400Mhz G4 PM (10.4 Server)
1.5GHz Powerbook---1.6Ghz G5 iMac

Can you recommend a USB WiFi card that works with the Mac?

In comparison with your MacBook Pro, the Mac mini's wifi antenna is smaller and literally buried inside the system's casing, and while it is just under the top cover (in the back-right corner) anything above the mini or indeed any sources of interference will significantly impact the signal strength, more than likely on laptops or other systems where the antenna is less likely to be bounded by metal casings.

Re: Mac Mini WiFi booster: ethernet or USB?
Aaron,
Yes, I know, much to my regret. But I did not know the exact location of the antenna. Thanks.
