WHOOAAA, Newbie!
An iMac with the covering? They all have a covering, usually made of plastic. We're gonna' need a bit more than that to go on.
And what exactly are you updating? Quicktime, the OS, your productivity suite... I image the latest updates through Software Update in System prefs, but, ahhh, I'm not there. I'm here.
Also, leaving your email addy out in public is a great way to get spammed, and you should expect answers to your (properly presented) questions to appear here, not be hand-delivered to you.

And I forgot to mention, this probably belongs in Everyday Tech, not The Pro Shop.

Re: Update OSx 10.5
Basically, paxonguy we need to know what OS you are on, what the Mac is you are on, it sometimes does make a difference, and what you are updating. And yes, you may not have the proper admin rights to update.
Check System Preference > Accounts. Look at your account. If it doesn't have Admin under your account name, then you don't have the proper rights to administer the computer.
