Funny Microsoft ad making me chuckle
I noticed an ad at the top of cnn website showing 2 sets of slot machine images, left set included a Macbook along with other goofy stuff like a pile of dirt, puzzle pieces and pocket lint. The right side shows different pc laptops with the windows logo along with 'cool' stuff like energy drinks, lattes and Zunes (cool? You be the judge).
Anyway, I laughed out loud when I realized how much heat Microsoft must be feeling from Apple to try and equate Macs with boring, unimaginative stuff like lint and bottlecaps. Thanks MS, you never fail to crack me up!

According to the article, I'm supposed to figure out the extra 'cool' stuff on the MS side are things you can buy in addition to the the laptop while you don't have any cash left over from the Mac purchase. Well, that's as clear as mud, lol.
I guess they use the same people to come up with they're ads as they use to design they're OS - namely people that can't even begin to think in understandable, logical ways.
Instead of 'cool' stuff like drinks and diapers (I kid you not!), they should show stuff like Norton 360, tech support & something to represent lost productivity to BSOD. Yeah, this is just getting more & more funny!

Re: Funny Microsoft ad making me chuckle
That commercial on tv where that women is attempting to look for a computer that has the features she wants for $699: I love how she calls the Apple Store the Mac Store. I guess this is some MS "clever" way of attempting to disrespect Apple? Pretty immature as it makes them look even more stupid to anyone who knows anything about technology. And yes, I do know that even those who are tech savvy on the Windows side still write Ipod, and stuff like that. But this mistake is coming from MS who obviously should know better.
Shows you money does not buy you brains, especially in MS's case. I mean, do they get anything right?

What I hate about this ad, is the fact it has made it impossible for me to sell any of our over $800 dollar 15-17" in Laptops no matter how much better they may be.

Anybody who buys a $500 laptop deserves what they get.
Buying a cheap computer is like buying a cheap prostitute. Tedious, unpleasant, and you're virtually guaranteed to get a virus.

"I guess I'm not cool enough to own a Mac."
Yep. You're exactly right. Now take your old 17" $700 laptop (with the resolution of a 15" screen) and go play solitaire.

What, sacrificing function, portability, speed, resolution and reliability for price?
Yes they got what they PAID for. Cheap does equal cheap. Go a and buy an HP or Dell laptop for under $700. most times you get 1 GB or RAM. Dell offers multiple GB of RAM, however you are sharing the RAM with the video. And working with a 32-bit Vista OS, well, not my idea of a great system.

Re: Funny Microsoft ad making me chuckle
I think it's a pretty fair ad. In fact, when she said she'd have to double her budget to get a 17" Mac, they kind of implied that you could get a 17" Macbook for $2,000 - instead of the $2800 it actually costs.
This is the laptop she got, for 1/4 the price of the 17" Macbook:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp … 8041148373
It has 4GB of RAM, a 320GB HD, 4 USB, eSATA, and a card slot for expansion. Macs are overpriced, and I really think it is going to bite them hard. You can't sell a computer at premium prices with very un-premium specs. (especially talking about the minis, Macbooks, and the Macbook Air) Over the past decade or so I've seen many parts of their product line go from "a bit pricey, but worth it" to a blatant rip-off. Even after switching to cheaper and widely-available Intel chips, the Apple tax is growing.
Right now on MacRumors the article about this ad has 1226 positives and 1602 negatives. That's right - more than 43% of the readers on a Mac-friendly site agree think this is a good ad. That's pretty damning testimony. Imagine if 43% of democrats voted for John McCain...
I don't wish Microsoft well, but I do wish Apple would come back to reality. After years of recommending Macs to friends and family, and helping them buy and use them, I no longer recommend them in most cases. Sad.
I believe in Karma. That means I can do bad things to people all day long and I assume they deserve it.

Re: Funny Microsoft ad making me chuckle
Where to begin... The Turion is a POS processor. It runs hot and inefficiently - she'll be lucky to get more than two hours of battery life out of the thing. The actual resolution of the display is what Apple puts on their 15". For the 17" Apple provides full HD rez. The MBP has gigabit Ethernet for when you're in the office. The HP is also over a pound heavier and almost 2x the thickness of the MBP - have fun lugging it around.
You're right that Apple doesn't make anything to compete with this and there are cheap folks who don't believe that you get what you pay for. But I'd be willing to bet that the MBP would be viable longer and have a much longer service life than the HP.
Apple is Apple. They are not Dell. They are not HP, they are not WalMart. They don't strive to make the most inexpensive product. If you want a Mac, you'll need to spring for a good machine, not a cheap POS.

1/4 the price, has a screen resolution of 1440 x 900 Macbook Pro 17 has a 1920 x 1200.
4 USB vs 3 USB and a Firewire 800.
The HD 3200 is old, discontinued technology. The NVIDIA 9600M GT is current technology.
Battery life on the HP is 2.5 hours. On the MacBook Pro it's listed as 8 hours.
Not really a good trade-off, all told.

Re: Funny Microsoft ad making me chuckle
I don't think any clarification was needed in this thread. Anyone who looked up the specs of that 8lb POS knows it is indeed a piece of smurf. Also I read somewhere the battery is listed at 3 hours meaning she will be lucky to get an hour and a half out of it.
That thing should not be mentioned in the same breath as a MBP. There are too many things that suck about that HP to list.

Buying a cheap computer is like buying a cheap prostitute. Tedious, unpleasant, and you're virtually guaranteed to get a virus.
Funny analogy.
But, that aside, getting malware on your computer is avoidable by not being an idiot. In a way those "Your computer may be infected by malware or spyware" popups are self fulfilling, because if you click on them, they probably already are.
The price of the computer has nothing to do with its susceptibility to viruses.
Also, I think the ad is garbage
1440x900 is fine for any purposes. I mean really, back when I had a 19" CRT display, even though it supported up to 17XX x ???? I still preferred using it at 1280x1024. You're not going to notice a difference.

Using a condom is a lot easier than using antivirus software, and yet a fair number of people do neither.
The price of the computer has nothing to do with its susceptibility to viruses.
In the interests of never letting logic get in the way of a good farce:
100% of people who buy a new laptop for less than $800 bought a PC. ~95% of people who spent >$2000 on a new laptop bought a Mac. Therefore, if you spent >$2000, you're 5% less likely to be victimized by Conficker.
And just to save somebody else the trouble:
On a more serious note: many of those bargain basement laptops don't come with AV software, or the AV software they have is time-limited. (The HP linked above comes with a 60-day subscription to Norton Internet Security.)

Um... you're beginning to worry me, dv.
Anyway, just to get this straight- a Mac is like a pricey Vegas call girl, and you can't wait to get for LGA 1566 to build a dual quad-core model?

Essentially, yes. You can get a functional equivalent for less elsewhere, possibly even for free if you do it right, but it's at least twice as expensive as anywhere else. The more you think about it, the less it seems like a good idea... but heeeeey... it's Vegas!!! And the pimp is really convincing.

I dunno, it's pretty clear that the 17" HP MS uses as an example isn't well suited for gaming. May as well be a paperweight...

17" gaming laptops with at-least-17" MBP-specs typically start at about 9 pounds and have pathetic battery life. They roxxorz in the performance department though - SLI graphics, desktop Quad Core CPUs, some even use 3.5" HDs or 2.5" RAIDs. (once you get into the 11-15 pound range.
The MBP/17" is really a pretty unique combination of features and portability. I've never seen anything similar, anyway.
