Powered USB 2.0 cable for powerbook G4 with insufficient USB power

So I got a western digital portable external 320 GB harddrive.

The unit itself only has one USB port on it, and no spot for a power supply.  My computer's USB ports do not supply enough power to run the device.  They suggest getting a usb 2.0  power booster cable, which from what I understand devotes both your USB ports to the one device.

Is there any other way I solve this problem without monopolizing BOTH my usb ports?  This is quite silly to me, as this problem only occurs on powerbooks, which only have 2 USB ports in first place.

help appreciated, thanks

What you need is a powered hub. It will have many USB ports and its own power supply.

I can't recommend any specific model because I don't have one, but I DO KNOW they exist.

In fact, I believe some use the method you mentioned. They plug into 2 USB port, but give you 4 or 6.

Belkin has several which are very nice. you can choose from 5 and 7 port models.
