VLC 1.0.0 'Goldeneye'... is golden (title edit)
Matt Asay points out a recent update to VLC as they narrow in on a 1.0 release. Already a favorite of many, the open source project has made great strides in recent history towards really solidifying the position as best-in-class. This update, 0.9.9, fixes several display bugs and sees some definite performance improvements.
"If you've yet to try VLC, do so. Whether you just want to play media files or also want to convert them, VLC can handle just about anything you throw at it. When all other media players fail, whether on Windows, Linux, or the Mac, VLC will almost always deliver. You can download VLC media player 0.9.9 here. It's open source, but that's not why you'll want to keep using it. You'll use it because it's better than its proprietary peers — by a long stretch."

Indeed. I just wish the Mac version could be skinned.

VLC is the best. One thing that bugs me though, is the garbled images you get when skipping around. Oh, and the lack of finder previews. It's still the best, tho -- by far.

Yeah I hate that it cant scrub video worth a smurf. At least it doesn't crash when you do it anymore. It's export options are a bit of a joke as well. It's a strong player other than that.

I think that's probably an artifact of certain encoding schemes, especially when there are infrequent or no key frames (frames in the video where the whole image is stored). Since most compressed video uses a delta encoding scheme (only changes in the video are recorded), the garbled stuff you get is really those delta changes applied to images they weren't meant to. Thus, the video looks like crap until a long enough time for the errors to be filtered out has passed or until a key frame is reached.

I realize that. But why not simply go back to the last keyframe, and rebuild the image properly up to the current point? Common VLC, get to it

I haven't used VLC since I discovered Movist. It's like QuickTime and VLC in one app.
I keep VLC around for the videos Movist has problems with though.

The VideoLAN project is glad to invite you to test the first release candidate of the Goldeneye version of VLC, numbered 1.0.0-rc1.
Source tarballs and Windows binaries are already available for download.
VideoLAN would like to take the opportunity to mention the Skins2 contest we are organizing during this release cycle time. To develop a skin, you can use our new VLC Skin Editor. Please share this contest news on your prefered social bookmarking or news site.
VLC 1.0.0-rc1, codename Goldeneye, is a test release of the 1.0.0 version of VLC. It introduces many new codecs, various playback core improvements (frame-by-frame, live-recording, instant pausing, etc...), interface improvements, new features and many bugfixes. We encourage people to test and report regressions that could have crept in this release.

The skins contest is now over, and we have 6 skins that fullfilled the requirements. You can vote now!.
At the same time, the VideoLAN project is glad to announce that the fourth release candidate (and hopefully last!) of the Goldeneye version of VLC, numbered 1.0.0-rc4 is out.
Source tarballs are ready, but binaries should follow very soon on our main website.

God, those "final 6" skins from the skin contest are HORRID!!!!
I think the skin they use now is functional and uncluttered. Why change it? Its worked for years!

Yes, I just used it to transcode about 5 movies from dvd to apple tv format and it seemed snappier than the previous version. I never really cared much about 64 bit apps as I never ran one before (still using CS2), but I can see clearly now why it's such a big deal, can't wait until Snow Leo for a fully operative 64bit system!

Re: VLC 1.0.0 'Goldeneye'... is golden (title edit)
My readings indicate SL isn't quite fully 64-bit. A few system files and whatnot are still 32-bit, don't remember which offhand.

Re: VLC 1.0.0 'Goldeneye'... is golden (title edit)
The current Beta does have some stuff that's still 32-bit. I'm hoping that the final will be completely perfect. Seeing as the WWDC Beta isn't really for consumer consumption, so they can get away with "shipping" an unfinished OS. Since the WWDC build is merely for developers to use for making sure stuff still works.
Speaking of which, Movist stops showing up as an app that plays media in the "Open with" menu anymore. Which is odd, since I can still force something to open with it, but even if I open the Get Info window, Movist doesn't show up at all until I browse for it. So weird.

Off topic, but I really like(d) the interface on NicePlayer. But the player can be a little buggy, and development for it seems to have stopped.

Re: VLC 1.0.0 'Goldeneye'... is golden (title edit)
All the players are extremely buggy in Snow Leopard. VLC, MPlayer Extended, Movist. For once, the only player that doesn't suck anymore is Quicktime X. If only it could play every file VLC, MPX and Movist could. EVERY file. I'd much rather have one single video player to play everything, and since QTX is so enhanced and advanced and perfected, it would be nice to be able to use it. Plus, we'd be able to open more than one file at a time for once. (Seriously, why can't VLC, MPX or Movist play more than one file at once? What is the deal with this limitation that QuickTime has never had?)
