You sir have no idea how bad it gets out here. Humidity doesn't always mean sufficient rains to stave off fires.

The dominant vegetation here is saw palmetto & scrub pine both of which grow in fire prone areas.

That may be the case - but (pardon the pun) I don't think your wild fires hold a candle compared to what happens in the west with low humidity.

I'm probably wrong about why they frown upon it where you are.
Could it be that humid air traps the particles longer than dry air, creating a very real air quality problem?

In terms of area and frequency you might be right about that but they are still often quite a serious matter. Actually I do think the humid air traps the particles longer than dry air, but it ends up being less of a localized problem as it tends to get distributed further and/or get washed out of the air under even the lightest rain conditions.
