My wisdom teeth were pulled yesterday.

First of all, allow me to issue apologies to everyone I called and babbled at until my brother took my phone away. I wasn't all there. Hopefully whatever I said was funny.

So, I lay down in the dentist's chair at the maxilofacial surgery ward. I am scheduled to have 2 wisdom teeth removed - #17 and # 32 (the bottom ones). The nurse, training to be an RN, has the job of keeping me alive. I get an IV, and the dentist and I have a chat for a bit. He gives me something in the IV that "will make me feel drunk". We chat for a bit more, and at some point they put Ketamine into my IV.

From that point, I remember only these things:
1 At some point, I woke up and said to the nurse
"You're cute."

She responded "I am married".

"Me too. That's too bad for you."

2 During the surgery, I woke up again. There were 3 docs of some sort around me, and I think the nurse was in the back corner. I did not know who they were or why they were there. "These people must be my friends!" I thought. "Why else would they be here?" I then attempted to raise my right hand to wave at them. I believe I was told to put my hand down. I don't remember if I did, because I was gone again.

3 I woke up in the waiting room. I asked some guy in a yellow and black striped shirt where I was at. I also asked him if he was a space alien. He said we are on earth, and he is not an alien. He wasn't sure about those other people though.

4 Some time after that, the nurse wheeled me out. I commented that we were going very fast. I wasn't displeased with the speed, just commenting. I believe she slowed down anyway.

My brother tells me that I was pointing at people. He says I did not mention anything to or about them.

And that was how my day went.

I get today and tomorrow morning off, and light duty (paperwork only) for the next week.

I have to wait for a bit before I can go shooting again. I am going to wait for 2 weeks or so. I would rather not have concussive pressure right next to a gaping hole in my face. That would probably hurt.

Re: My wisdom teeth were pulled yesterday.

I had a great time (for the most part) with mine. I got all 4 out. 2 were impacted the other 2 probably would be and I didn't want to have go though it all again. They didn't tape down the IV right the 1st time. eek the had to pull the tape off *ugg* and put it down again. Then it was the time for the gas ... at which point everything was funny. Then I woke up and I couldn't feel my tongue ... so I stuck it out ... and everyone told me it wasn't safe and I need to put it back in my mouth I told them "thas buh sthit"  ROFL  Then I slept and  drank Sprite "Remix" for 2 days.

Let me tell you, I am glad I was married by the time I got my taken out, because she went above and beyond to take care of me afterwards. She got me a new star wars book and tshirt that I ended up puking on later.

IV's and being knocked out for wisdom teeth?

Here you get a couple needles of freezing and you hold onto the arms of the dentist's chair!

No. We go under. Much easier.

Woosies.

In the Army they give you novacaine, and pull the suckers, pack cotton on them and send you back to duty. Then 3 weeks later, I went back and had the two on the other side pulled. Rinse and repeat.

Re: My wisdom teeth were pulled yesterday.

When I had mine done, I remember lying down. Next thing I knew, I was on my feet, stumbling over to a waiting chair. Once there, I somehow had the mind, yet not the sanity, to write a message with my phone reading: "Good times, dry mouth." I was mostly out of it for the next two days.

Re: My wisdom teeth were pulled yesterday.

I'm not a fan of needles, and had never had a IV before...so they gave me valium to take the night before, and then again the morning of the surgery. I remember stepping off the porch like "whoaaaa" (sorta felt like how you feel after getting new glasses). Surgery was ok, had all 4 out (oh this was during spring break in college), and I think I was either talking and/or snoring coming out of anesthesia. Got home, and was wired. Everyone told me I would be so wiped I would sleep the rest of the day, but I wound up cleaning. About a week later, (not sure if it was the valium) made me sick. I was at Church..and all of a sudden I felt pretty lousy. Barely made it out the door, and barfed. And then again by the curb...and then again by someone's car....fun stuff...

Sounds like a typical weekend.  Including the missing teeth at the end of it.

You obviously didn't have this guy. I spent longer getting novocaine shots than losing teeth. Though I must say I was feeling no pain when he was done.

Re: My wisdom teeth were pulled yesterday.

I have no idea but probably it is linked to the reason his office is two blocks from the inter-coastal waterway and he lists a few watersports as hobbies on his about me page on the site. Then again things like dolphins, fish, and nautical gear are standard decorations in a lot of businesses here in Palm Bay & the harbor city.

Re: My wisdom teeth were pulled yesterday.

I think they gave me Tylenol 3 at the time, which worked well.  I never experienced any pain at all after having my wisdom teeth pulled (unlike my sister, who was in terrible pain for days).

Re: My wisdom teeth were pulled yesterday.

I had two wisdom teeth out right after high school. Only one was impacted (it was practically sideways) but the dentist said that it's always best to pull opposing top/bottom wisdom teeth.

Anyway, this is when I found out that I react badly to narcotic painkillers. As soon as I got home, I vomited. Projectile vomiting of not much food and no small amount of blood is unpleasant enough, but having that rush past brand new stitched sockets is really awful.

Then we tried this folk remedy where they say to apply teabags to the surgery site to stop bleeding after wisdom teeth removal.
I'm fairly certain that the direct-to-gums-and-blood infusion of caffeine plus the residual bad feelings from the drugs are what made me particularly unhappy and pissed off the rest of the day.

Re: My wisdom teeth were pulled yesterday.

Mine ached, but I must not have had whatever pain it is that people talk about having, because it was ignorable without medications.

Took me a day and a half to sleep off whatever they pumped into me though.
