3D Realms Calls It Quits
If you've been waiting for Duke Nukem Forever, and still had faith in the project, this news will sadden you
After numerous delays and years of hype in the gaming community, it looks like 3D Realms will never release Duke Nukem Forever, as the game studio has run out of money and will close its doors.
"We can confirm that our relationship with 3D Realms for Duke Nukem Forever was a publishing arrangement, which did not include ongoing funds for development of the title," explained publisher Take-Two.
Duke Nukem Forever has been in development for more than 12 years and was a follow-up to the popular 3D video game released by 3D Realms in 1996. The studio's games were popular more than a decade ago, but simply couldn't match game studio development in the 21st century, according to video game industry analysts.
The studio also worked on Commander Keen and Major Stryker, which were popular but never reached the same level as Duke Nukem and Wolfenstein 3D.
Take-Two and other studios involved in the project noted that the game may not be fully dead, but after such a long delay in development, it's highly unlikely the game will ever hit store shelves.
"Development of the Duke Nukem Trilogy is continuing as planned and further announcements about upcoming games will be made in the near future," according to a statement issued by Apogee Software.
News of the studio's closure is especially ironic as 3D Realms recently celebrated the 17th anniversary of its release of Wolfenstein 3D, which first hit the market in 1992.
Darn it. If not for the recession, we might've had three more years before they gave up.

Maybe it's a marketing ploy. A link to a post on their forums was still working.

Good riddance. I'm surprised they managed to hold on this long. It's sad that some people are losing jobs in this economy, but twelve years to develop a game. Twelve years. Twelve. A dozen. Twelve freakin' years. They should have gone under years ago.
Hopefully the DK IP will wind up in more competent hands...

Or Microsoft.
Anyway, I liked Duke Nukem, but always though Shadow Warrior was better. Why doesn't anybody talk about making a new Shadow Warrior?

BC used to quote that sometimes, but 'fessed up in an email a few years back to never actually playing it. I guess he just liked the line, esp. when Glenda was in thread. Think she worked on the Mac port.
Games don't get sequels because of merit, anyway. It's all about the moneyz. Duke was in dev 12 years as it was- where would 3DR have got staff to put on a SW sequel? It was their IP.
There was a free add-on released a few years back, but AFAIK it's Winders-only. Got it archived somewhere.

Yeah, I played a few 3rd party maps, or scenarios, or whatever you call them. Some worked on the Mac, some not.

Found it- it's called 'Shadow Warrior: Wanton Destruction,' is an .exe (swwd.exe) and comes in at 21.7MB. That would be about the time (11/25/05) I got the DOS(?) version at the local compy show, which prompted the email.
Er... Won-ton destruction. Groan.

Gaming's oldest preorder may go unfulfilled
Will this gamer ever be collecting the pre-order he placed in 2001?
Answer: probably not. His $10 deposit was placed on Duke Nukem Forever, a first-person shooter that, after being in continuous development for an unprecedented 12 years, was suddenly canceled yesterday.

Gum quantities are insufficient at this time
http://www.thebitbag.com/2009/05/10/3d- … microsoft/
David Villarreal brought this up the other night before the Warzone and I nearly flipped out. It makes so much sense it’s not even funny. This is purely speculation and not a rumor or fact.
So it begins with Microsoft getting rights to distribut Duke Nukem on Xbox Live. Isn’t it kinda strange that they would put such a classic PC game on Xbox Live? They updated it, added Live support and now every gold user can have a blast from the past online.
On May 6th, 3D Realms closed their doors and their site went down. The site came back up a day later. The funny thing about the timing of the closing of 3D Realms is that it’s less than a month away from E3. What David told me completely blew my mind the other night. He thinks that Microsoft bought 3D Realms and that they are working on Duke Nukem Forever as an exclusive Xbox 360 title to be published by Take Two.
It just seems to make a whole lot of sense. Microsoft loves releasing classic versions of their games on Xbox Live before and sometimes even after an updated version is released. This could be one of Microsoft’s megaton’s at E3. Again, it’s just speculation but it would be really cool to see this happen. I’ve been waiting for Duke Nukem Forever since the game was announced.

Hmm, well certainly could be possible. Duke is a pretty big franchise. Even with the age, he's still a classic iconic character. Just copy n paste him into a Unreal engine, add a bunch of politically incorrect quotes which everyone loves, and mix in some strippers...got yourself a new Duke game

It's never really a good thing when projects get canceled...means developers will take the safe road and make cookie cutter games...hope someone else picks this project up

The TLA for this game is "DNF." It never stood a chance.

Less strange than acquiring and thoroughly updating Marathon 2. The game engine got widescreen support, runs at 60 f/s, textures got filtered etc. etc.- all by veterans. And that game never approached Duke 3D's sales on PC.

You'll be waiting a long time, I'm afraid. Take Two is suing Apogee, parent company of 3DRealms.

Re: 3D Realms Calls It Quits
I cant see any game company NOT wanting to get their hands on the rights to make DNF. The game has so much hype that it would be guaranteed profit.
I'd love to see Rockstar make it.

3D Realms "Not Closing" [May 18, 2009, 5:13 pm ET]
3D Realms asserts that "Despite rumors and statements to the contrary," (such as the Goodbye on their own website), the company "has not closed and is not closing," according to a press release issued to Shacknews. They do confirm they "are saddened to confirm that we let the Duke Nukem Forever (DNF) development team go on May 6th, while we regroup as a company," and as for the future, they say: "While 3DR is a much smaller studio now, we will continue to operate as a company and continue to license and co-create games based upon the Duke Nukem franchise." Apparently not one of those companies that avoids commenting on pending litigation, the remainder of the press release offers their side of the story in their legal conflict with Take-Two over Duke Nukem Forever, giving details on exactly which payments they did not receive for the project, and exactly when they did not receive them.

Take-Two suing Duke Nukem makers
Rockstar parent Take-Two is suing 3D Realms and Apogee Software for the continued delay of Duke Nukem Forever.
3D Realms closed its doors last week and let staff go, having first announced the development of Duke Nukem Forever in 1997.
"Apogee continually delayed the completion date for the Duke Nukem Forever," said Take-Two, reports Bloomberg. "Apogee repeatedly assured Take-Two and the videogaming community that it was diligently working toward competing development of the PC version of the Duke Nukem Forever."
Take-Two originally paid USD 12 million for the publishing rights to the game, and in 2007 entered into a second agreement with Apogee.

Re: 3D Realms Calls It Quits
Seems to me 3D Realms is just trying to get out from contract with Take-Two. Likely Take was getting impatient, prolly made some demands which 3D just couldn't keep. But if they were holding back funding at times, i'm sure 3D's staff wasn't happy with that continuing. Likely will come out once it gets to the courts.
