Some republicans plan to rebrand democrats as "socialists"

This is pretty stupefying:

A member of the Republican National Committee told me Tuesday that when the RNC meets in an extraordinary special session next week, it will approve a resolution rebranding Democrats as the “Democrat Socialist Party.”

When I asked if such a resolution would force RNC Chairman Michael Steele to use that label when talking about Democrats in all his speeches and press releases, the RNC member replied: “Who cares?”

Which pretty much sums up the attitude some members of the RNC have toward their chairman these days.

Steele wrote a memo last month opposing the resolution. Steele said that while he believes Democrats “are indeed marching America toward European-style socialism,” he also said in a (rare) flash of insight that officially referring to them as the Democrat Socialist Party “will accomplish little than to give the media and our opponents the opportunity to mischaracterize Republicans.”

Right...."mischaracterize."

Link.

A conservative faction of the Republican National Committee is urging the GOP to take a harder line against both Democrats and wayward Republicans, drafting a resolution to rename the opposition the “Democrat Socialist Party” and moving to rebuke the three Republican senators who supported the stimulus package.

In an e-mail sent Wednesday to the 168 voting members of the committee, RNC member James Bopp, Jr. accused President Obama of wanting “to restructure American society along socialist ideals.”

“The proposed resolution acknowledges that and calls upon the Democrats to be truthful and honest with the American people by renaming themselves the Democrat Socialist Party,” wrote Bopp, the Republican committeeman from Indiana. “Just as President Reagan’s identification of the Soviet Union as the ‘evil empire’ galvanized opposition to communism, we hope that the accurate depiction of the Democrats as a Socialist Party will galvanize opposition to their march to socialism.”

Link.

Seems like yet another brilliant way for the party to expend its time and energy...

The stupid party has a random chance of accomplishing some good.  Not so, the evil party.

I can't even tell if they're the "stupid party" or "evil party."

Yes we've really run the gamut in the last few days.  It doesn't matter what the word actually means, just pick the one that sounds most insulting for the moment and run with it!

Why don't they just make their lives easier and just call the democratic party "evil doers"?

Re: Some republicans plan to rebrand democrats as "socialists"

So rather than presenting ideas on how best to serve America using their Republican ideals, rather than working towards the goal of restructuring a fractured party, rather than making any sort of positive use of their time, they've decided to resort to name-calling.

kev should be happy. Enough of this and come next election the Republicans really will be about as influential as the Reform Party is and we really will have zero reason to talk about them.

Also, there already is a Democratic Socialist Party.

I still believe in liberalism today as much as I ever did, but, oh, there was a happy time when I believed in liberals.

Democratic Social Party wrote:

Democratic Socialists believe that both the economy and society should be run democratically—to meet public needs, not to make profits for a few.

So far so good...

Democratic Socialist Party wrote:

To achieve a more just society, many structures of our government and economy must be radically transformed through greater economic and social democracy so that ordinary Americans can participate in the many decisions that affect our lives.

Yeah...kinda jumped the shark there.

I love this plan. It's great!

I hope they trash the government instead of propose alternatives. I hope they express hope that the Democrats fail.

Oh and I hope they keep referring to political philosophy as "branding."

Keep up the good work, fellas!

What plan did the fractured Dem party put together during their time out of power in the Bush years?

Re: Some republicans plan to rebrand democrats as "socialists"

1936 Quote from HP Lovecraft on the Repub party.

"As for the Republicans—how can one regard seriously a frightened, greedy, nostalgic huddle of tradesmen and lucky idlers who shut their eyes to history and science, steel their emotions against decent human sympathy, cling to sordid and provincial ideals exalting sheer acquisitiveness and condoning artificial hardship for the non-materially-shrewd, dwell smugly and sentimentally in a distorted dream-cosmos of outmoded phrases and principles and attitudes based on the bygone agricultural-handicraft world, and revel in (consciously or unconsciously) mendacious assumptions (such as the notion that real liberty is synonymous with the single detail of unrestricted economic license or that a rational planning of resource-distribution would contravene some vague and mystical 'American heritage'…) utterly contrary to fact and without the slightest foundation in human experience? Intellectually, the Republican idea deserves the tolerance and respect one gives to the dead."

Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim.  Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet."  They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

Obama ran on "change".
My question was about the fractured Dem party and what they did right to take power from the Reps.
What you think the Reps are now failing to do to get power back.
