Re: Dick Cheney: hittin' the comeback trail!
Lets just stipulate that former presidents should keep quiet for awhile and move on.
"and it's not surprising that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

Re: Dick Cheney: hittin' the comeback trail!
The Vandenberg adage apparently was forgotten by former president Bill Clinton, who Tuesday spoke to Arab students at the American University of Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, and pronounced the U.S. invasion of Iraq a "big mistake."
"Saddam is gone, but I don't agree with what was done," Clinton said. "The American government made several errors ... one of which is how easy it would be to get rid of Saddam and how hard it would be to unite the country."
Many might agree with Clinton's view, but a former American president going overseas and criticizing his own government used to be considered a no-no.

Pretty mild criticism too. Even Repubbies admit that "errors" were made.

If Clinton had uttered a fourth of what Cheney has in the first five months we would have heard squeals of "treason!!1!!" from many on the far-right.

Cheney is not only not waiting, he's keeping up the stream of photo-op speeches as if he's still in office- in this country, to US media coverage. Obama makes a speech, Cheney replies with a speech at The American Enterprise Institute (basically saying everything was done right, he'd do the same again in a heartbeat, beating the enhanced interrogation drum).

However, this isn't about breaking custom. Cheney was directly attacked by the Obama administration with the accusations of torture. You can't expect him to just bend over and take it, he's going to stand up for himself, and he did.
I don't believe that Obama has directly accused Cheney BY NAME for anything. OTOH, Cheney has been hitting the tv shows since about January 21st doing just that.
The torture allegations were well in place before the changeover. Obama is simply dealing with it as he must.

He's an idiot. And the GOP is a complete disaster. They'll come back, but they need to offload this entire set of turkeys - ranging from Palin to Cheney to Limbaugh... basically anyone with any position of influence - before they come back to their own.
It's a pity, actually, since a decent opposition is a good thing.
(Of course, the Democrats seem to be doing a pretty good job of both governing and opposing right now...)

Re: Dick Cheney: hittin' the comeback trail!
...and talk about distortions in Cheney's speech. Just a few:
He quoted the Director of National Intelligence, Adm. Dennis Blair , as saying that the information gave U.S. officials a "deeper understanding of the al Qaida organization that was attacking this country."
In a statement April 21 , however, Blair said the information "was valuable in some instances" but that "there is no way of knowing whether the same information could have been obtained through other means. The bottom line is that these techniques hurt our image around the world, the damage they have done to our interests far outweighed whatever benefit they gave us and they are not essential to our national security."
— Cheney said that "the key to any strategy is accurate intelligence," but the Bush administration ignored warnings from experts in the CIA , the Defense Intelligence Agency , the State Department , the Department of Energy and other agencies, and used false or exaggerated intelligence supplied by Iraqi exile groups and others to help make its case for the 2003 invasion.
Cheney made no mention of al Qaida operative Ali Mohamed al Fakheri , who's known as Ibn Sheikh al Libi , whom the Bush administration secretly turned over to Egypt for interrogation in January 2002 . While allegedly being tortured by Egyptian authorities, Libi provided false information about Iraq's links with al Qaida , which the Bush administration used despite doubts expressed by the DIA.
A state-run Libyan newspaper said Libi committed suicide recently in a Libyan jail.
— Cheney accused Obama of "the selective release" of documents on Bush administration detainee policies, charging that Obama withheld records that Cheney claimed prove that information gained from the harsh interrogation methods prevented terrorist attacks.
"I've formally asked that (the information) be declassified so the American people can see the intelligence we obtained," Cheney said. "Last week, that request was formally rejected."
However, the decision to withhold the documents was announced by the CIA , which said that it was obliged to do so by a 2003 executive order issued by former President George W. Bush prohibiting the release of materials that are the subject of lawsuits.

Re: Dick Cheney: hittin' the comeback trail!
Yeah, I just saw some of that speech on CSPAN this morning. Cheney actually stated that it was President Obama's direct decision to keep the documents classified that Cheney had requested made public. Like I said, Dick knew they couldn't be released all along and was making claims that he knew he didn't have to prove.
I turned it off because I was yelling at the TV at 4:30 in the morning.

If Cheney showed up at my door asking if he could stay for dinner, I'd smurfing call the cops. If he tried to force his way in, the cops would find I defended myself from a terrorist/home invader. I might well be dead but I will have protected my family and improved my country & the world in the process.

GWB himself would be simply told to leave unless he tried to force his way in in which case you'd see the headline, "Bush arrested in home invasion". Bush Sr and/or Clinton would be welcomed and if Sr brought GWB with him, I'd relent a little out of respect.

Is Obama creating "an American Gulag?"
Facts and myths (ed: groan!) about Obama's preventive detention proposal
Joan Walsh notes that preventative detention could last "ten years or more". While that's a step down from the Republicans generation, or century, it still outlasts Obama. Even if we believe Obama is a benevolent enlightened dictator sort of chap, he's constitutionally obligated to step aside in favor of someone who may follow a different, even more indefinite timeline.
I think it's time for some liberal pushback.

Re: Dick Cheney: hittin' the comeback trail!
Cheney is attributing to Pres. Obama what the CIA Directors have instituted since 2003. Evidently irritating Cheney. So he is actually critizing the Bush admin.
As for the extended detention that Pres. Obama is touting for some detainees, the simple solution is one that was raised a couple of nights ago. Simply declare them POWs. POWs may be detained indefinately, during the duration of the war. And since this "War on Terror" seems to be long-term, that would solve the problems, give them legal protection under law, and enable the government to hold them until they die of old age.
Problem is solved all the way around.
