Problems with Bluetooth on 17" MacBookPro:
Hello:
I have been having strange problems with Bluetooth and Blueteethed mice
on my 17" MacBookPro.
a) Sometimes everything works great and there is no problem.
b) Other times things start out great and for no known reason the mouse just dies
on me. I go into the Bluetooth Panel and attempt to re-pair (pun intented) it
and it never finds it. I go back and try and Discover it again. It finds the mouse
but can't pair it. The only way I have been able to fix it is to delete the mouse
from the Bluetooth Panel and reboot and attempt to discover and pair it again.
this works most of the time.
c) Occasionally, I can't pair the mouse when the system first boots up, in that case
I plug in my USB (wired) mouse and hope that next time I reboot it will be better.
I have already gone through 4 mice, and am now convinced that the problem is not
with the mice.
What can I do to diagnose this problem or to fix it?
Thanks in advance:
Michael

Re: Problems with Bluetooth on 17" MacBookPro:
What model (processor speed) of 17" MacBook Pro do you have? What brand of bluetooth mouse are you using?
I'm leaning towards a software issue. With the hardware it would be rare to have intermittent working, it usually would just be off if the card was bad.
As far as troubleshooting. If you had another bluetooth device that was connected and worked fine, then you'd know for sure it was software and hopefully would be fixed on your next software update.

Re: Problems with Bluetooth on 17" MacBookPro:
I used to experience the same problem but discovered it happened more often with "Microsoft" brand bluetooth mice. Another cause of what you are describing can be if, once you have paired your mouse with your computer, and after you shut down your laptop, do you turn off the mouse to save on batteries? If you do turn off your mouse, BEFORE you turn your laptop on, make sure the mouse is turned on first.
Other issues I have encountered are (of all things) having the mouse too close to your laptop. Bluetooth mice that are too close (within 3 to 4 inches) also tend to "disconnect". Bluetooth is dependent on the signal from the internal antenna inside your Mac reaching the Bluetooth mouse and yes, the signal can "overshoot" the mouse. This happens on occasion with my iMac, but repositioning the mouse just a bit farther from the iMac usually corrects the problem. One more thing... make sure nothing is between your laptop and the mouse that could inadvertently block the Bluetooth signal.
By the way, I threw away my Microsoft mouse and got a cheap "Rocketfish" and it works great. Even with all this... once in a while, you are just plain going to lose the connection. If you can't get the mouse to recover the signal, a simple re-start is in order. Good Luck!

Yeah, I usually use the mouse close to the pc. Usually 1-6 inches to the right of the laptop.
Before using this Rocketfish, I had tried an Apple Wireless Mighty Mouse, a Microsoft Bluetooth Mouse,
and the Logitech Bluetooth Mouse. It has been better recently, but I still have occasional problems.
I turn the computer and mouse off during the day. I normally wait until the computer is off before I
shut the mouse off. I usually turn the mouse back on while the computer is booting.
Thanks:
Michael Yanowitz

Re: Problems with Bluetooth on 17" MacBookPro:
You've got the latest version of the bluetooth software (2.1.6f8)
Using Apple's Mighty Mouse you should have avoided any brand incompatibilities.
I took a look in the internal Apple docs and haven't seen anything that would point to hardware. I bet if we swapped the bluetooth module you'd still be having issues.
Since it's somewhat working now I would probably recommend waiting for a new software update or even Snow Leopard to see if the bluetooth is a little more stable.
Nice setup by the way. 8GB's of RAM!

Re: Problems with Bluetooth on 17" MacBookPro:
It had been working well for almost a week.
However, Today I upgraded ITunes, GarageBand, and QuickTime.
I was asked to reboot to finish the installation and now the
Bluetooth mouse no longer works.
Any ideas.

Re: Problems with Bluetooth on 17" MacBookPro:
Interesting (and unfortunate) You may want to try re-pairing the mouse. I wonder which of the three effected bluetooth (I'm guessing iTunes?)

I am not sure. I was able re-pair it after a couple of reboots. Hopefully it will stay.

Re: Problems with Bluetooth on 17" MacBookPro:
I believe this is caused by ANY systen upgrade.
The same thing happened again Today during upgrade.
I lost the mouse, I rebooted, and re-paired it.

Apple just released a new Bluetooth Firmware Update, version 2.0. Hopefully this will help/solve your issue?

Re: Problems with Bluetooth on 17" MacBookPro:
I have upgraded. I am still having troubles.
I mostly using a wired USB mouse now though
which works well without any problems.
Unfortunately it uses a USB port, but I can use a hub if I need it.
