Re: Prop 8 Decision due today...

If it is upheld, it's a setback but not a death blow - the opposition is aging its way out of relevance. If it's struck down, it's a death blow to the opposition.

Re: Prop 8 Decision due today...

I'm guessing it will be upheld, although my understanding of the law suggests that it shouldn't be.

Re: Prop 8 Decision due today...

It was upheld.  Marriages that were performed while it was legal have been grandfathered in.

(That's per CNN HLN - I don't see a link yet)

Re: Prop 8 Decision due today...

The amendment was upheld. Marriages that took place before the amendment was passed will be recognized by the state.

I guess this means that there will have to be another amendment to repeal this one in the future? I agree that this is a generational thing and in a few years there will be less opposition to same-sex marriage.

Well, at least I get to rub this in the faces of all the Californians who like to pretend they're more progressive and enlightened than the troglodyte Midwesterners.

Californians are, as a group, pretty damn stupid

"The court said the people have a right, through the ballot box, to change their constitution."
Yeah by a majority that was just above 50-50 at the ballot box, that had the clout to make life changing constitutional amendments. California's political system is a smurfing joke, first with the whole prop 8 debacle and now their Supreme Courts response to their decision.

Re: Prop 8 Decision due today...

I'm a bit disappointed. But the only recognition that really matters is at the federal level. The current administration appears to be every bit as smurf as the Clinton administration when it comes to LBGT issues, so I'm not holding my breath. It just sickens me that I'm currently in a country that is a religious state and I would be treated more equally under the law here than I would be in the US.

perhaps robco is visiting...Israel ?

Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim.  Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet."  They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

Re: Prop 8 Decision due today...

Aha. Yes, gays have a lot of rights there, but they're a very long way from permitting same-sex marriage.

What sickens me about the California example is how it's become such a populist issue. So goddamned hateful.

Re: Prop 8 Decision due today...

It's murky right now. The supreme court ruled that while same-sex couples cannot be married here (the Chief Rabbinate still has control), Israel should recognize marriages performed elsewhere. So Israeli same-sex couples can be married in Belgium, Netherlands, Spain, Canada, etc. and return to Israel and have their marriage recognized. It's a grey area since technically civil marriage doesn't exist here, but couples have what is essentially common law marriage and most of the rights of married couples. I have yet to see a single Democrat submit a civil unions bill to Congress.

I was also speaking more broadly outside marriage. The IDF allows homosexuals to serve openly. Employment discrimination is prohibited on a national level, and adoption rights are also protected. So yeah, Israel certainly isn't perfect, but on a national level I would be treated more equal under the law than I am back in the US - which is supposed to be a secular democracy.

Oh come on now, it is sooooo much more "cool and hip" to praise and support Ron Paul.  By a long shot.
