Setting it up?

I finally got everything I needed to build the computer I can afford.

MSI KT3 Ultra2       $82.00
Athlon XP 1700 R.   $69.00
256 DDR 2100         $49.00
Seagate 80 7200     $103.00
Case with 350W       $39.00
G4 MX 64DDR 8X      $85.00
CD/RW                    $29.00
CD ROM                  $15.00
Floppy Drive            $15.00
Grand Total        $486.00

The frustration of putting everything toguether: PRICELESS mad

Do you guys know of any website that would explain every step on how to set up the system? I don't have the drivers for the CD/ROM on a floppy disk and I need the CD/ROM to install the operating system, is there a generic Driver for any CD/ROM? please let me know ASAP, I can't wait anymore.

Re: Setting it up?

Which OS are you using?  The mobo should detect the CD-ROM as a standard ATAPI device, and XP installs straight off of it.  Win98 and earlier need a boot floppy, which loads a generic driver so you can start the CD-ROM.

I didn't want to install XP, but if it's going to make my life easier, I will.

Can I just format the harddrive using the CD?

Yes but why?  Just stop the install after you format the Hard drive.

You sould use NTFS and leave about 5 MB unused.

Re: Setting it up?

OK, it's done, I now have a Windows XP Pro.

Just that I have 2 partitions, one is the one I am using now with 40 GBs I don't see that other one. I could always reinstall everything again. Can I get those 40 GBs back, without erasing the entire harddrive?

Thanks everyone

Re: Setting it up?

You can get at the remaining unpartitioned hard drive space by going into 'Control Panel>Administrator tools>Drives' where you will see the remaining hard drive space as unpartitioned. You can launch the wizard to get this space partitioned how you like (the wizard may launch automatically).

Now, is there a way I can install Windows 2000 on the other partition?

Thanks

Re: Setting it up?

Ummm, formatting hard drives is a royal pain in the a$$. I hate doing it.

The last time I did a wipe/reinstall (oh, about two hours ago, now. Computer's working fine.) I had top boot from a Windows 98 CD (to get a DOS prompt, Windows 2000 doesn't do that), run fdisk to destroy my old NTFS partition (containing evil Windows XP) pop a Windows 95OSR2.5 CD (to get a valid format command - not part of windows 98s setup CD, but the 95 CD isn't bootable) into my second CD-ROM drive, run the format utility (format Csmile and then eject all the CDs, insert the Windows 2000 CD, restart the computer, and let the MS wizards take it from there.

Has Microsoft ever heard of a clean install? Jeez.

Oh well, I least I figured out how to do it without a floppy disk.

Windows CDs since 98 have been bootable, and will install themselves on a system with an appropriately prepared (FAT32) hard drive. 2000 and XP will automatically reformat the drive as NTFS before installing. Too bad 2000 won't see anunformatted partition and let me select that... it would have saved me a heck of alot of searching for CDs.

Re: Setting it up?

I been using Macs since System 6.7 or 6 I can't remember. But from what I remember, to install a new system on a Mac, was as simple as 1 2 3, or not? now with the new systems like 7.5 and up, it is simpler. I'm pretty sure you guys know all about it.

MS should comeout with a Startup CD, with a bunch of Utilities, or maybe they do,  wink

Re: Setting it up?

Well they do.  Windows 2000 and up.  BUT you need to be a computer genus to use it.  big_smile It dose not just come out and hit you like the Mac dose.

Take our friend dvpierce.  I can do everything that he talked about with a 2000 CD (of curse his solution shows grate intelligence and problem solving skills).  But you have to read all those stupid blue screen instructions vary carefully.  And know how to speak Microsoft.

Re: Setting it up?

It considered a "best practice".   NTFS 5(NT sp 4, 2000, and XP) can use unpartishined space when bad sectors start showing up on your HDD.  Also after NT (2000 and XP) you can do little tricks like extending partitions across 2 or more HDD(dynamic disks).  But you need to have space remaining on the first HDD.

I came up with 5 MB just as a generic size.  It is not too big and not to small.

So, how _do_ you do it with just a Windows 2000 Install CD? (Mine's an OEM CD w/ SP2, if that makes a difference...) big_smile

I'm not too keen on wiping my drive again just to find out, but I'll these directions on file. They'll probably come in handy.

Thanks a lot!

Hey guys, how do I check the CPUs temp?

2 ways usually. Either your motherboard manufacturer shipped a utility that you can install from your mobo CD that allows you to check the cpu temp or you can go into the BIOS in most systems and check in there.
