Re: Nothing new under the sun
I'm guessing that you're largely unfamiliar with 19th century newspapers.

Re: Nothing new under the sun
Well, for one thing, Indiana, Pennsylvania is a rather small community. Yet it apparently supports two newspapers.

The paper is real.
I don't know if that scan is real (found it on a site that deals with Sasquatch, dire wolf, etc. reports) but I did verify the paper actually existed at that point in history.

Re: Nothing new under the sun
That point in history is about 90 days leading up to the 1888 election. From the wiki link I just posted:
The United States Presidential Election of 1888 was held on November 6, 1888. Incumbent President Grover Cleveland received the greatest number of popular votes, but Republican challenger Benjamin Harrison's 233 electoral votes topped Cleveland's 168 to win the election. Just 12 years earlier, in the election of 1876, the same thing had happened where the President-elect had failed to win the popular vote. It would not happen again until the election of 2000, 112 years later.[1]
Harrison, the Republican, carried PA.
Weird outlandish claims (aka 'smears') like the references to the mountain dew dems are truly nothing new under the sun.

That wasn't what I was implying. Most communities had two papers, one controlled by the Republicans (or Whigs, or Federalists) and one controlled by the Democrats. More often than not, they were subsidized. Impartial reporting came along somewhat later.

Yes - exactly my point.
I thought it was kind of funny. It was a bit more blatant back then.

No more so than talk radio.

Mhmm. Politics and drinking were the main two pursuits of young men with money back then.

Re: Nothing new under the sun
It's worth noting that newspapers in the 19th century tended to be blatant propaganda mouthpieces for political parties. The idea of "independent" news sources didn't catch on until sometime in the 20th Century (and even then they all unquestioningly support the status quo).

No, but more blatant than the newspaper press.
Talk Radio is not real journalism, and most talk radio hosts will even tell you that.
I've heard Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity specifically say it.

Of all the oddball UFO/JFK-theory/Loch Ness stuff out there, I have to say that Sasquatch is the most believable.

So, this demonstrates yet another way that Fox News is a throwback to the nineteenth century? Neato!

Maybe it works - Fox does have the #1 rating in several of its time slots, and I believe #1 rating overall.

Re: Nothing new under the sun
"for cable"
And that has no bearing on their accuracy or quality.
Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.
