Re: Tiller murder thread
What a shocker! Tiller's accused killer asserts links to Operation Rescue
The man charged with killing Wichita abortion doctor George Tiller said in an interview he was angry at a major anti-abortion group that he thought had abandoned him.
Scott Roeder also said from jail that he was elated that Tiller was dead and that he knew he could be going to prison for decades.
He talked about his whereabouts on the day of his arrest, including plans he had made to pick up goat milk and cheese at a farm west of Kansas City.
The Kansas City Star interviewed Roeder three times in recent weeks, including once at the Sedgwick County Jail.
In a phone interview Friday, Roeder said he was upset at the president of Operation Rescue, Troy Newman, who had condemned the killing and said his organization had nothing to do with Roeder.
“He said that I never was a member and I never contributed any money,” Roeder said. “Well, my gosh, I’ve got probably a thousand dollars worth of receipts, at least, from the money I’ve donated to him.”
Roeder said he wrote Newman a letter from jail.
“I told him, ‘You better get your story straight because my lawyer said it’d be good for me to show that I was supporting a pro-life organization.’ ”

Re: Tiller murder thread
Nice catch. He's getting to be quite the quote machine it seems:
Roeder, 51, has been charged with first-degree murder. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.
During interviews over the past several weeks, Roeder ranged over a number of topics:
•Tiller’s death
Roeder said he felt “relief and joy” over the shooting.
“And I’ve heard that three women have actually changed their minds and had their babies because there’s no availability here,” he said. “Wichita has been abortion-free since that time.
“That’s total elation.”
•Roeder’s actions that day
Roeder was careful in answering questions about his whereabouts the day Tiller was killed.
“For the man accused of this,” he said, “things fell together for that day.” He added that “it would have been earlier if things had panned out.”
He declined to elaborate.
Roeder didn’t admit being in Wichita that day but said, “I remember reading in the paper that they were checking all the toll booth cameras” on the Kansas Turnpike. “There are ways to get to Wichita without taking toll roads.”
and
Wrong flower
Dressed in a maroon jail-issue jumpsuit, Roeder was animated and in an upbeat mood throughout a 30-minute jailhouse interview. He laughed about media reports that a red rose was in the back window of his car when he was arrested. A red rose is a symbol in the anti-abortion movement.
“My roommate, he was visiting some friends and brought home some carnations,” he said. “I took one to put on my father’s grave.”
Tuesday looms.

Unless the defense waives the preliminary hearing set for Tuesday, prosecutors must convince a judge that they have enough evidence to merit a trial. Roeder would then enter a plea.

Why is this man being allowed to participate in interviews with the media?

So, you're claiming that it's an attempt to poison the jury pool?

Also, I'd like to see his donation receipts from OR for that thou he claims. He's evidently had little income for the last decade. That thou gets a MacBook these days. A sizable investment (even spead over time) for someone of modest means.
Most likely any donations have been the other way around. A quid pro quo for services in kind or some such.

The Wichita Eagle
For the first time since Wichita abortion doctor George Tiller was shot to death inside his church, the public will hear the details today about what happened that May morning.
District Attorney Nola Foulston expects to call fewer than 10 witnesses this morning in a preliminary hearing for Scott Roeder, the man charged with first-degree murder in Tiller’s death. Sedgwick County District Judge Warren Wilbert will hear testimony and evidence to determine if there’s probable cause to send Roeder to trial.
Today’s hearing is expected to once again bring attention to Wichita as a central site in the nation’s heated debate over abortion. Tiller’s death shocked both sides of the abortion controversy, although Roeder has spoken publicly about his joy at the killing.
Foulston said she expected this to be a “pretty straightforward hearing.” Wilbert will likely hear testimony from Gary Hoepner and Keith Martin. Prosecutors say Roeder pointed a gun at Hoepner and Martin after shooting Tiller.
The judge also may hear testimony from responding officers and Rick Craig, the lead homicide detective on the case.

Judge Wilbert tells Eyewitness News prosecutors expect to call seven or eight witnesses to the stand.
Gary Hoepner was serving as an usher with Dr. Tiller when the shooting occurred, and he says he still gets emotional when he relives the gunshot.
"When it first started, I had trouble sleeping," says Hoepner. "I kept reliving it. It's gotten better over time."
Hoepner and another man who police say chased Roeder from the church will be two of the main prosecution witnesses on Tuesday. Wichita Police say Roeder threatened the men and pointed his gun at them when they tried to follow him.
Hoepner says his full story will come out in court, but he still prays for Tiller's family and his church family. He says the repercussions of the murder have been significant. He recalls a parent asking their pastor what to do recently when their child asked, "Are we going to be killed in church?"
"This just doesn't happen very often in somebody's church," says Hoepner. "To violate our church is just something I would never imagine in my life that I'd ever see."
Last Friday, prosecutors endorsed several new witnesses for trial, including the woman who shot Tiller in 1993, Shelley Shannon. Prosecutors say they plan to call fewer than 10 witnesses during Tuesday's preliminary hearing, and Shannon will not be one of them.
It is important to note Tuesday's hearing is designed for prosecutors to lay their case out for the judge. We won't hear from defense witnesses or the defense side of the story until Roeder's case goes to trial.
Eyewitness News Reporter Cliff Judy will be in the courtroom and provide a live interactive blog throughout the day Tuesday. Stay with KWCH on-air and online for his reports.

liveblogged earlier:

Parker says the three witnesses from Dr. Tiller's church have asked their faces not be recorded or broadcast, though we'll be able to hear their testimony through our live video feed.
While these witnesses are on the stand, you'll probably see a picture of Roeder or the prosecutor questioning the witness.
One of the witnesses from the church will be Gary Hoepner. He actually saw the shot that killed Dr. Tiller. Hoepner did an interview with Eyewitness News yesterday.
9:32
Court is beginning.
9:34
Gary Hoepner is the first witness to take the stand.
Hoepner told me yesterday that in all honesty, he's extremely nervous about testifying today.
Hoepner says the last two months have been extremely emotional for him. He couldn't sleep for awhile after seeing Dr. Tiller shot, and he kept reliving the shooting.
huh.
The coroner should be on today too. That might be interesting.

Re: Tiller murder thread
Hoepner's play-by-play of events that day:
9:46
Parker is showing Hoepner pictures from inside the church.
Hoepner says when the shooting happened, the doors to the church had only just been shut and processional at the beginning of the church service was just starting.
9:49
Hoepner says he and Dr. Tiller were standing next to a welcome table in the foyer of the church. The table had some donuts on it, and the two were making small talk.
9:50
Hoepner says a door to the church opened and he recognized Roeder as a man who'd been at the church the Sunday before.
Hoepner says Roeder had stepped out of the sanctuary to use the restroom the Sunday before, so he didn't think anything of this.
9:51
Hoepner says Roeder walked up to Dr. Tiller, put a gun to his head, and shot Tiller.
Hoepner says he heard a pop.
"I almost thought it might be a cap gun, but then George fell," says Hoepner, "and I thought, 'Oh my God!'"
9:52
"It just happened so fast, I don't know if I actually saw him squeeze the trigger," says Hoepner. "I saw him put the gun up to (Tiller's) head, though."
9:54
Parker asks about details of the shooting and the shooter.
Hoepner again says he recognized the man from attending the previous Sunday's service. When Parker asks if Hoepner sees the man who shot Dr. Tiller in the courtroom today, Hoepner indicates Roeder.
9:57
Hoepner says he actually had his head down when Roeder came out of the sanctuary.
Again, Hoepner says he didn't think anything of this because the previous Sunday, Roeder had done the same thing to use the restroom.
"I looked up just in time to see him raise the gun to George's head," says Hoepner.
10:00
Hoepner says at one point on a previous Sunday, Roeder had left a note in the church's offering plate. Dr. Tiller didn't attend church that day.
10:04
Hoepner says Roeder immediately left the church, and he followed Roeder out.
Hoepner says Roeder turned around and yelled, "I've got a gun, and I'll shoot you."
Hoepner says he immediately stopped, but Roeder continued on. Hoepner says he then kept following Roeder at a distance and tried to get to his truck because that's where he'd left his cell phone.

WICHITA — Scott Roeder, the man charged with killing a Wichita abortion doctor, won't go to trial until at least next year, the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office said this morning.
Roeder was scheduled to go on trial Monday, charged with first-degree murder in the May shooting death of George Tiller.
Roeder's new trial date has been set for Jan. 25, 2010.
Tiller was shot to death inside Reformation Lutheran Church, where he was serving as an usher, on the last Sunday in May.
Open and shut case.
OTOH, no need to wake Bat yet.
