Saudi Arabia bringing back crucifixion

http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/meast/05/ … topstories

(CNN) -- Saudi Arabian officials beheaded and then publicly displayed the body of a convicted killer in Riyadh on Friday, an act that prompted a stiff denunciation by a leading human rights monitor.

The Saudi Interior Ministry said Ahmed Al-Shamlani Al-Anzi was sentenced to death and then "crucifixion" -- having his body displayed in public -- for the kidnapping and killing of an 11-year-old boy and for the killing of the boy's father, according to the official Saudi Press Agency.

Amnesty International issued a statement deploring the punishment, with the group's Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui saying in a statement it is "horrific" that beheadings and crucifixions "still happen."

Even though the word "crucifixion" is used to describe the public display, the act has no connection to Christianity and the crucifixion of Jesus. The bodies are not displayed on crosses, Lamri Chirouf, who researches Saudi Arabian issues for Amnesty, explained.

Well, almost. They behead the clown first, then sew his head back on, and put him out for public display. Frankly, for this particular scumbag, I think they should have stuck with the basics - and just nailed the guy to a cross like the Romans did.

Sure, it's cruel, perhaps a but unusual, but I guarantee you it would get the attention of other scumbags who might be thinking of diddling a kid, and then killing them. If it weren't for the obvious constitutional issues, I'd recommend Roman style crucifixion as a method of execution here in the states. Forget lethal injection - how about hours of excruciating pain, knowing that when you give out, you will suffocate and die. Oh, and you would need to issue the guards swords - just to be sure. All you would need is some stadium seating for the victim's family, and it would be a perfect throwback to a classic civilization.

The Saudi style gets the job done, though; and while less gory, probably just as effectively. Note, I would only approve of this method for people who mess with kids. Everyone else gets the needle.

Sorry, but this is cruel and barbaric - nobody deserves that. And "classic civilizations" weren't such a great era for everyone.

Cruel and barbaric acts beg a cruel and barbaric punishment. While I'm not hip on cutting people's hands off for theft, etc. for certain classes of crimes, I think the Muslims got it right.

The trouble with sharia law is that it's too international a style; it needs to be tweaked before it becomes acceptable to the nativist right.

No, the Muslims have nothing right. They are trying desperately to drag us back to the dark ages (so are many christians and ultra-orthodox jews). These people treat women as property - do they have that right too?

I'd like to think we've moved beyond "an eye for an eye" - everyone winds up blind and toothless.

Yes, the Saudi Legal system is something free countries around the world should aspire to.

For example, if a woman is raped, to prove her innocence there should be at least 4 men available who directly witnessed the event who can testify.

Oh and I'm sure there standards of proof put western courts to shame as well.

Here's a deal: When torture and maiming does more than just give you a hard-on and actually resurrects murder victims, we'll do it. Until then, we remove people who are a danger to society by the most effective means we have available and work on prevention.

Oh yeah, I think our society could definitely benefit from the public display of the corpses of decapitated criminals.

Might as well bring back public executions and floggings.

They worked sooo well to prevent crime during the 1300 years before they were discarded.

Well then, show me one modern, progressive, democratic, Muslim state and we'll talk...

Re: Saudi Arabia bringing back crucifixion

But not Saudi Arabia.

The fact that we consider SA to be a close friend and ally is laughable. Turkey isn't completely Muslim and does not use sharia as the basis for its civil law. Indonesia is on the fence. Malaysia isn't exactly a beacon of religious freedom either.

The Armenians would beg to differ with you, but nonetheless, Turkey is majority Muslim, and were it not for Ataturk, it would still be a Sultanate of the Ottoman Turks.

The U.S. tortures for fun, the UK has surveillance cameras everywhere, Canada clubs baby seals, France is no beacon of religious freedom either, Germany outlawed Scientology...

Can you name any country that is modern, progressive, and democratic?
