Activision threatens to pull PS3 support

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick continues his crusade for a PS3 price cut. Citing the weak economy, Kotick has repeatedly called on Sony to cut the price of their latest console in the hopes that a price cut will lead to a surge in game sales.

In his latest rant though the Activision boss has taken things to another level. Speaking with UK publication Times Online Kotick says Activision may stop supporting the PS3 platform if Sony doesn't reduce the PS3's price:

“I'm getting concerned about Sony; the PlayStation 3 is losing a bit of momentum and they don't make it easy for me to support the platform. It's expensive to develop for the console, and the Wii and the Xbox are just selling better. Games generate a better return on invested capital on the Xbox than on the PlayStation.

They have to cut the price, because if they don't, the attach rates [the number of games each console owner buys] are likely to slow. If we are being realistic, we might have to stop supporting Sony.”

When asked for a time frame, Kotick responded: "When we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console — and the PSP [portable] too."

Sony has been quite resolute in changing everything but the price of the console.

Sony, predictably, says no cut is coming, but one is widely rumored for August.

Admitting it now would just cause most to wait.

It's a legitimate concern. Not only has the PS3 been a relatively slow seller,  the dev kit sucks. Not really worth the effort for anything but sure sellers.

It is an odd thing, but every one who disappears is said to be seen at San Francisco. It must be a delightful city, and possess all the attractions of the next world.

Slow seller... difficult to develop for...

Deja Vu... I'm sure I've seen that before...
