ExtremeTech going away
ExtremeTech will be folding up its tent this Friday, June 26th. The current staff: writers Jason Cross and Joel Durham, producers Jeremy Atkinson and Mike Nguyen, our enthusiastic forum moderator, Jim Lynch, plus yours truly, will be leaving Ziff-Davis.
That means this is the last Notes from the Basement column, at least, the last one hosted by Ziff-Davis. So be warned: this column may be long—not because these are all my words.
It's been a long, strange, wild ride full of discovery and certainly one of the highlights of my eclectic career. But ExtremeTech is not just about me. The site was founded by Nick Stam and Bill Machrone back in 1999, and officially launched in May 2000. I've asked ET staff, past and present, to chime in on what they thought was significant and special. So before I weigh in with my own thoughts, let's hear from them.
Let's start with Nick Stam. (My comments are in italics, and any errors in those comments are purely mine.)
This truly saddens me. Of the 5 writers tapped for farewells, I go back with, have read 4 since the '90s; in all but Jason's case, the mid-'90s. I have at least one of his books. Joel Durham & Loyd handled tech duties at CGW in its glory days. Dave Salvatore was resident Mac guy, tho that rarely showed; and Jason Cross was tech/graphics guy at Computer Games Mag; early '98 for him. ET's been one of my web mainstays for years, and this seems abrupt, no one knowing where they'll land. There's no mention even of an archive, and these pages have many a link to ET articles.
So long, ET. It's been good.

Re: ExtremeTech going away
Made a mistake on staffing in my upset. Dave Salvatore and Loyd were Tech Eds at CGW, mid-90s. Joel was the [first] Tech Ed. at PC Gamer, before becoming Editor-in-Chief in the days of Coconut Monkey and his never-finished opus, Gravy Trader. Those were the years when those mags were thick as small phone books, and covered everything from CRPGs to the new MMOs to joysticks, for those who remember 'em, when what you used for a flight sim or Mechwarrior game mattered- and when there were flight sims and MW games. Games with customizable controls; not hasty ports from consoles.
Makes me wonder if we're all, writers, gamers, games like that and hardware for them, dinosaurs.
Well, dinos can still live a long time.

Re: ExtremeTech going away
It appears there's been a slight change in plans. Compare to post 1 for details, but at a glance it seems as if ET will be rolled into the larger Z-D structure rather than ending entirely... but it's still finis for my guys.
ExtremeTech is changing. The current staff: writers Jason Cross and Joel Durham, producers Jeremy Atkinson and Mike Nguyen, our enthusiastic forum moderator, Jim Lynch, plus your truly, will be leaving Ziff-Davis at the end of this week. Executive Editor Jeremy Kaplan (former editor of ExtremeTech Magazine) will take over management and editorial direction for the site.
[etc] 6/22/09
Dave Salvatore left ET years ago for a job with Intel, if that wasn't clear, but as a former stalwart was asked for comment.
