I don't like the thought that one day all the features I am used to will just disappear, either for a few days while you wait for an update, or forever if Apple decides to completely cut it off one day.

I should point out 2 of the Firefox plugins I use are broken with no word on when or if they will be fixed.

Name them. They don't just break. There is something causing it. Did you update Firefox? Did you look for updated versions?

Tab History & Stop-or-Reload Button.

Not unless the browser is updated (a situation not too dissimilar to the one under Safari).

Yes I updated to 3.5.

Only once or twice a day for the past week.

Re: Firefox 3.5 Tues 6/30 (title edit)

Mozilla's Firefox browser does not lead Microsoft's Internet Explorer in market share, but it does lead in other ways.  The new 3.5 version of Firefox introduced last week offers support for the latest standards, including HTML 5, XHTML, and SVG graphics -- all of which stock installs of Internet Explorer 8 do not support.

However, Mozilla does trail Internet Explorer 8 in one respect -- Mozilla has not offered an official 64-bit version of its software.  One developer is working to catch Mozilla up, though.  Since 2008 a contributor who goes by the screen name Makoto has ported Firefox 3.0, and now 3.5 to 64-bit editions.  He has announced recently that he plans to contribute the 64-bit versions for 3.6 and up, which may mean that Firefox will at last get an official 64-bit build.

Advantages of the transition to 64-bit include faster speeds on pages using encryption, fast-call type function calls, and more efficient memory mapping of large files.  Initial benchmarks from the 64-bit build show impressive gains in certain applications.

A notable downside of the patch for Firefox 3.5 is that it breaks Mozilla's plug-in system, which relies on a 32-bit architecture.  However, Mozilla has talked recently of adding official 64-bit support in the near future, so this will likely be addressed shortly.

Mozilla May Finally Move to a 64-Bit Browser With Firefox 3.6

Yes I updated to 3.5.

Only once or twice a day for the past week.

Install MR Tech Toolkit and turn off compatibility checking.

Tab History works with me. I just installed MR Tech Toolkit and Tab History just to test it out and it works fine. "Not Compatible" usually just means "We hard-coded an older version of FF into the version compatibility because we don't know if it will work next time so this keeps us safe from people complaining."

After MR Tech Toolkit is installed
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1859
Log in and click "Ignore version check". It will install. Restart and it's done.

And that Stop Reload button thing doesn't need an add-on. What a waste! It's a simple snippet of CSS you can put in your userContent.css or a Stylish userstyle. Or if you really want an extension, there is another extension that does the same exact thing but works with up to 3.6 so...

Code:

@namespace url(http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul);

#stop-button[disabled="true"] { display:none; }
#stop-button:not([disabled]) + #reload-button { display:none; }

Though once you install MR Tech Toolkit, your existing Stop/Reload extension will magically work again so I guess you won't need this.

Now install MR Tech Toolkit and maybe Stylish and quit yer complainin'!

Ooh, 64-bit! Can't wait for that. My goal with Snow Leopard is to get all my apps to 64-bit Intel as fast as possible. I still have a whole bunch of stuff I run on SL that hasn't been updated yet. PTHPasteboard, Logitech Control Center (Well, it was updated. But the 64-bit version in SL doesn't recognize my mouse anymore.), GeekTool (Fat chance getting this one. It hasn't been updated since xCode was still called Project Builder 6 years ago. Why hasn't anyone picked up development on this?), BowTie, Growl (Everything, including HardwareGrowler) and DragThing.

Try SteerMouse, Jasoco. It works great on Logitech products. I don't know if it's 64-bit, but  you can program all of your buttons.

Re: Firefox 3.5 Tues 6/30 (title edit)

It costs money. $20 is too much for mouse controls I can get for free. I can wait for September for the SL final and Logitech to update Control Center again.

It's the same reason I haven't bought USB Overdrive. Money for something I don't see as being worth money. Or at least not the amount they charge.

$5 is the most I'll pay for a mouse driver.

Re: Firefox 3.5 Tues 6/30 (title edit)

Or until the irritation makes it worth more. I have found it worthwhile, and worth the money. Especially if you want to use one of the more modern Logitech mice and take advantage of the hardware capabilities.

Logitech sucks vacuum considering their POS mouse control software. Kensington has better proprietary software, and theirs isn't that good.

I've never had good luck with Logitech software on any platform. OTOH, I've heard nothing but praise for USB Overdrive.

Re: Firefox 3.5 Tues 6/30 (title edit)

I seem to have irritated the support people on Logitechs support forum. I was a very dis-satisfied customer, when they couldn't provide a solution to a problem that I and several other people had with a mouse and their software. I finally posted that people with that problem either should get a different brand or use USB Overdrive (which I used to solve the problem). I still found that not giving me the full solution, so I returned that mouse for a kensington. I do use an MX518, and on the Windows side, I get very little functionality from their software. I use SteerMouse on the Mac side and it works quiet well.

Why are you talking about mice in a Firefox thread?

(Not that I care about FF. And my cheap Logitech is great thankyouverymuch.)

Nothing unusual, just a thread hijacking.

The usual. You know.

So, when is 3.6 coming out?

Later. Meanwhile, update to 3.5.1 ASAP...

Firefox update fixes zero-day JavaScript flaw
Just-in-Time vuln fixed in nick of time       17th July 2009 10:18 GMT

Mozilla has released an update version of Firefox that addresses a previously unpatched flaw that has become the target of hacking attacks over recent days.

Firefox 3.5.1, released on Thursday, resolves a Just-in-Time (JIT) JavaScript compiler flaw in version 3.5 of the popular open source browser software, as explained in Mozilla's advisory here. Exploits based on the vulnerability were posted on a security site on Tuesday so Mozilla deserves credit for acting promptly on what might otherwise have been a potentially nasty problem that posed memory corruption and malware injection risks.

The latest update also corrects a performance issue that resulted in slow start-up on Windows systems.

Users are advised to apply the update, remembering to re-enable the Just-in-Time compiler in cases where Mozilla's previously suggested workaround has been applied. ®

...which disabled it (the JIT compiler).  http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/07/17/firefox_update/

Re: Firefox 3.5 Tues 6/30 (title edit)

FF 3.5 slower than its old version so i install RAMback plugin to reduce mem usage, and some add ons cant be used on the newer version.

I hope 3.6 will be came out soon. smile
