Re: Court rules unaniamously for Franken

Gore v Bush, 2000

Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim.  Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet."  They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

That is just plain stupid.

When you say dumb things like this, I really have to wonder just how well you actually understand what "freedom of speech" is.

I understand it well. I can say what I want! teh freedom to say dumb, ignorant, arrogant, hurtful, hateful, incosistent, illogical, contriditory, inflammatory, wrong, racist, extremist, politically incorrect, and just plain stupid, shall not be infringed upon.

Even if it does run afoul of laws about inciting to riot, treason, lible, slander, et. al.

It's very difficult (perhaps impossible) to get a treason conviction from mere speech. Sedition, yes, but treason, no. Perhaps sedition is an end run around the treason clause.

I wouldn't say we've improved a lot. A disturbing number of kids drop out of school and too many who do "graduate" can barely read, write or handle basic math. Minority students still tend to do poorly, but that's likely due to socioeconomic status. It doesn't apply to all ethnicities. But there are
still plenty of dumb Caucasian students out there.

The white majority should consider increasing the civil rights statutes. It should only be about another 40 to 50 years before the white majority turns into the white minority in this country. Or at least a plurality.

Here's an Alabama Literacy Test. Note that part A is subjective.

Plus, the application form was four pages long, cced to the KKK, and the Council of Concerned Citizens.

Re: Court rules unaniamously for Franken

Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK) had some kind words for the newest member of the U.S. Senate, Al Franken.

"I'll tell you what a lot of people are thinking," Inhofe told the Tulsa World, discussing the decreasing likelihood of successful Republican filibusters, "and that is it looks like things are going to be over and we are going to get the clown from Minnesota."

"I didn't mean to be disrespectful. I don't know the guy, but ... for a living he is a clown,'' Inhofe added. "That's what he does for a living."

Franken was, indeed, a funny-man for a living. So what's Inhofe's excuse?

And by the way, folks, the Republican Party celebrates as their greatest hero a former actor who starred in a movie in which his character became the adoptive father of a chimpanzee. There's nothing wrong or disqualifying about acting alongside a chimp, of course -- it sounds kind of fun, actually. But the complete double-standard, and the seemingly total unawareness of it, are pretty striking.

Link.

Inhofe has made a living as a professional politician for nearly his entire adult life.

You'd think a conservative would shy away from poking fun at people who actually worked in the private sector to make a living.

I would have liked it if Franken had responded to the decision by accepting it and saying that he was glad to get to work because he was good enough, he's smart enough, and dog gone it, people like him.

Ballot software need not be open source. It should be open to inspecting by the regulatory agencies of the state.

The system must be verified independently that it is practically tamper-proof.

The current system is not tamper proof. It's wide open to tampering.

And the guy who owns the company shouldn't be such a dummass that he goes around saying that he's going to win the election for xxx.

The day electronic voting machines are as secure as an ATM is the day they will be acceptable to me.
That day will never come because the cost of such secure hardware and software will be too much for any but wealthy districts.

The nice thing about using an ATM us that all transactions are anonymous. What I do at the ATM is none of the bank's business.

I didn't see anything on that test that was racially biased. In fact, it seems like a fairly good test for someone who intends to vote. If you can't score at least a C on it, you need to go back to school, not vote.

How about people who don't know the history of poll tests and taxes? Should they be sent back to school before being allowed to vote?

No, I'm not. I do think that people should be minimally informed before making decisions that affect everyone. A basic knowledge of government should be a requirement for participation.

What is so bad about that?

Yes, I know that in the past, these sorts of tests were used in a discriminatory fashion, and that is wrong. However, fairly administered, I think it could result in a much more informed, and effective, electorate. We keep talking about idiots getting elected, and it's because we've got too many idiots electing them.
