Re: Court rules unaniamously for Franken

The highly educated bankers that presumably would've passed any proposed test of citizenship were still self-interested and blind enough to nearly bring down the global economy. A few less-educated folks with more common sense might not've bought into no-asset, no-income loans, but their more-educated bosses said do it.

Know what? Those banks that've become profitable again recently, have done so by recapitalizing, floating new bonds based on... mortgage backed securities. They're not paying down the toxic assets, they're getting out from gov't restrictions so the kan haz their big bonuses again. They haven't learned a thing except maybe get yours while you can, the hell with the future. They're doing it to us again.

So I'm more than a little leary of this whole meritocracy thing. We already have it in various forms, public and private sectors both. We're a representative democracy/republic rather than a pure democracy partly because of logistics, anyway; imagine 1700s rural Americans having to travel two days to get anywhere to cast a vote or even hear about anything needing voting on. Couldn't have been done. Took another century just to get the telegraph.

Re: Court rules unaniamously for Franken

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Democrat Al Franken has arrived in Washington offering no jokes - just a promise that he is "ready to get to work."

The former Saturday Night Live performer and satirist made brief remarks after meeting with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Monday. Franken is expected to be sworn in to the Senate on Tuesday after a protracted, eight-month recount, then finally a concession by the Republican incumbent he beat, Norm Coleman.

Franken spoke slowly from a podium in a Senate corridor packed with press. As cameras clicked rapidly in the background, Franken said he wants to be known as Minnesota's second senator, not the 60th Democrat.

He says he will dive in to education, health care and energy issues.

After seeing his cable show (the Air America dual-cast), I think he could be a pretty interesting speaker on the floor.

Speaking for the community, we prefer to be referred to as "lushes."  Drunkard is pejorative.

Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim.  Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet."  They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

Re: Court rules unaniamously for Franken

The Republicans are staying classy about the whole thing, thankfully.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee has just released a new Web ad featuring footage of Senator  Al Franken that makes him look like an out-of-control, Red Bull-guzzling cross between Jim Carrey and the Hulk. The ad suggests that the Dem supermajority is about to go on an unstoppable rampage.

But there’s only one problem: The footage of Franken is actually of him delivering a tribute to the late Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone. Not only that, but Republicans already took a hit during last year’s campaign for doing this same thing. Here’s the NRSC’s new ad:

As you can see, at the moment where Franken looks particularly unhinged, he seems to be mouthing the words, “You can take this guy.”

A Democrat who worked on Franken’s campaign last year confirms that this is footage of Franken on the stump, relating a story told to him by Wellstone’s son, David. As Franken relates the tale, David told him that his father would run along the sidelines during footraces yelling, “You can take this guy!” In case you need confirmation, here’s some strikingly similar footage of Franken telling the same story in another setting.

Last year, Republicans used footage of Franken telling this story in ads designed to paint him as angry and unstable, and were roundly criticized for it. Now the GOP is doing it again.

A spokesperson for the NRSC, Brian Walsh, didn’t dispute the footage’s origins. “It’s surprising that the Democrats would take offense at some inaudible b-roll of Al Franken leftover from last cycle,” Walsh emailed. “I’d argue we were more respectful than we could have been considering some of the other photos of Al Franken taken over the years that might have been used as b-roll instead. We’ll certainly consider substituting it for this one if they would prefer though.”

Franken will be sworn in on a Wellstone family Bible.

The original has links.  The "other photo" that the NRSC suggests they could be using?  One that has already been demonstrated to be fake.  Integrity!

Link.

Re: Court rules unaniamously for Franken

Even more:

The NRSC now says, hey, don't blame us, we simply referred reporters to a link from the LA Times. "You'll note the link is to the Los Angeles Times, one of the largest newspapers in the country - if there's a question about the authenticity of the photo, you should direct your question to the LA Times," a NRSC flack tells us.

The saddest part of this, really, given the dismal shape of the Republican Party, is that these guys think this is truly clever. They're even smug about it.

Pretty pathetic.

Link.

Re: Court rules unaniamously for Franken

The RNC has recently requested soon to be Senator Al Franken (D-MI) to produce some sort of political gaffs to replace their outdated footage of his entertainment career. The request is based upon the allegations that the RNC is producing irrelavent and totally confusing attack ads against Franken that make no sense in today's political context.

Michal Steele commented on the uncooperative Franken as "discriminating against his political opponents" by not having done anything in the political arena for the last 6 motnhs that they could take advantage of.

Bratty, does this make you feel better?

Didn't republicans in this very forum spend years telling tasteless jokes about Wellstone's death?
