Re: RUMOR: CNN apparently saying that Palin will resign
The prospect of her running for President in four years fills me with an almost sexual level of excitement. That would be the Best Show On Earth for a PoliWonk like me.
She'll never win the nomination.

A Palin versus Romney primary would be such fun to watch. Can't see the thumpers flocking to the Mormon.

So what makes Republicans get little boners at the thought of it?I honestly wish that wasn't true.
It really frightens me that a major Party is so nakedly pandering to the most dumbed-down exteme fringe of the country.
My hope is that it leads them to a realization that that tactic is a sad dead-end, and they adopt a bit more intelligent -or thoughtful policy. So much of what that party once stood for has been completely tossed by the wayside. It once had a considerable wing of intellectuals, pragmatic and reasonable. They've been told to "get lost" in no uncertain terms (because they are "elite").
Stupid is as stupid does.
Both parties can do stupid very well, but the GOP has taken it to a whole new level.
That dumbed down portion of the country is actually a sizable voting bloc. . . and I think media contributes to a portion of it. The reality in the US electoral politics is that 50% + 1 = victory. Sure, Palin and the people operating/enabling at her level are likely driving away some smart people but people tend to pick a camp and I think a part of them always stays there for one or more of many reasons. . . pride not the least of them.

Other than the fact that they didn't flock to Romney last go around, need I remind you that I spent my first 18 years going to a Southern Baptist church, often three times a week? I know how these people look at Mormons. Then through Miss Sarah in that equation and it's a bit of a no brainer, no matter how much you'd like to wish otherwise.

We didn't flock to Romney because we had Mike Huckabee to flock to.
But not even the Huckster could beat out McCain (which is too bad).
I think Romney lasted longer than Huckabee, did he not? I'll have to check.
I liked Romney. I preferred Huckabee.
I dislike McCain - and when Palin was chosen as his running mate, that sealed things.
Politics aside, a VP needs to be qualified to be the President. I may not agree with Joe Biden politically, but he at least is qualified to do the job if something happens to Obama - Palin no.
Anyway - I definitely could see Romney taking the nomination and even the election.
There may be a religious schism between Evangelicans and Mormons, but there also is a religious schism between evangelicals and Catholics - yet Sean Hannity is held with high esteem.
Religious schism aside, morally Mormans and Evangelicals agree on more than they disagree.

Sean Hannity....high esteem...
Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

btw - Huckabee tried to play the religious schism thing with the "Jesus and Satan are brothers" thing and it didn't go over too well.
Romney's religion isn't that big of a deal to us.

Re: RUMOR: CNN apparently saying that Palin will resign
Odd how res's memory is so short. Huckabee came out of nowhere right before Iowa, for the simple reason that evangelicals wouldn't support Romney (or McCain though for different reasons).
An evangelical in Redding, CA might be more comfortable with voting for a Mormon. South Carolina, no, or anywhere in the South.

It wasn't that evangelicals wouldn't support Romney, it was that they (we) preferred Huckabee.
Again, note that when Huckabee tried to play the mormon card, it didn't do him any good. In fact, you could argue it backfired.

In fact - http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2007 … mormonism/ shows Huckabee back tracking after it didn't work.

I'm pulling for a Palin/Demint ticket.

Whatever happened to Joe the Plumber and Carrie Prejean? Their time isn't up yet, is it?
(There was a humorous interview with Jeb Bush last week--conducted by Tucker Carlson--in which Jeb was astounded by the fact that JTP had been invited to talk policy with the GOP. He had no idea. Talk about being out-of-touch...)

Look for a titanic primary fight between Plumber/Prejean and Palin/Demint. Romney, hopefully, will be fighting over table scraps, perhaps a Cabinet appointment.

Oh - and for what it is worth, religion wise - Redding is far more like the south than the Bay Area (where I grew up) is. Very conservative baptist, and unfortunately, still a lot of racial bias / tension - from people who often don't even realize they have it.

You can take whatever you want.
Romney being mormon certainly would lose him some votes in the primaries, but South Carolina does not determine the nominee for the party. 49 other states are involved.

Re: RUMOR: CNN apparently saying that Palin will resign
Romney is a used car salesman. All slick on the outside but inside he got nothing. I mean wow, the biggest talking part of his resume prior to being our governor was that he "saved the Olympics"! He did nothing for Mass. Claimed to be against tax increases so slick Mit raised every fee imaginable instead and still claimed he was the no tax guy. He left our state in shambles.
The Reps are in total shambles that will take years to recover from with lots of spin of course. They are an old out of touch party.
I was listening to Sirius Radio late last night (Howard 101) and there was a guy on (I wish I remembered his name - 1st show) who said he wanted to be the voice of the new Republicans b/c the old party is out of touch with the new generation of Reps. He mentioned things like religion, morale crusades against gay marriage, and other social issues that are irrelevant to young voters but the Reps continue to jam down their throats. He then mentioned how the Reps used to be the party of inclusion but beginning with Reagan began this morale crusade that split the party within itself as well as built up walls between Reps and Dems that were not there previously. It was an amazing show to me because I think I agreed with him on 99% of what he said. Even on fiscal issues.

So, just curious -- what's so wrong with Tim Pawlenty? Seems like he would have more widespread appeal from that side of the aisle to me, and from what I've seen is void of kookiness.
