I think most all of the intelligent republicans (and there are plenty) are just kinda laying low waiting for the crazies to run out of steam.
Think of it, would you want to try to be a "voice of reason" in the republican party right now? You'd be run out on a rail.

I'm sorry, but if the republican party is going to have to pander to become relevant than I want no part in it.

As if pandering to the religious right isnt what got them so deep into the nutjob zone in the first place!

I'm sure the new party Palin will no doubt be spinning up will be right up your alley.

Yes, I'm sure that the Revelation of St. John the Divine was meant to be applied to the GOP.

Indeed.
My own hypothesis is that the Abrahamic religions are based primarily on people getting baked, wandering into the desert and having visions: Abraham, Moses, Jacob, John the Baptist, JC, Paul, Mohammed, Joseph Smith...

Re: RUMOR: CNN apparently saying that Palin will resign
Ooh... new dish. Yeah, it's the dog days/doldrums.
Missteps, ignored advice on Palin’s route to exit
Seemingly relentless string of professional, personal woes led to decision
This article was reported by Jim Rutenberg from New York and Serge F. Kovaleski from Wasilla and Anchorage, Alaska. Jo Becker reported from New York and Kim Severson and William Yardley from Wasilla and Anchorage.
ANCHORAGE (NYT) - In late March, a senior official from the Republican Governors Association headed for Alaska on a secret mission. Sarah Palin was beset by such political and personal turmoil that some powerful supporters determined an intervention was needed to pull her governorship, and her national future, back from the brink.
The official, the association’s executive director, Nick Ayers, arrived with a memorandum containing firm counsel, according to several people who know its details: Make a long-term schedule and stick to it, have staff members set aside ample and inviolable family time to replenish your spirits, and build a coherent home-state agenda that creates jobs and ensures re-election.
Like so much of the advice sent Ms. Palin’s way by influential supporters, it appeared to be happily received and then largely discarded, barely slowing what was, in retrospect, an inexorable march toward the resignation she announced 10 days ago.
Ms. Palin had returned to her home state from the presidential campaign as one of the hopeful prospects in her struggling party, even if she had much to prove to her detractors. Standing before the Legislature in January, she vowed to retake her office with “optimism and collaboration and hard work to get the job done.”
But interviews in Alaska and in Washington show that a seemingly relentless string of professional and personal troubles quickly put that goal out of reach.

Over on kos today is a Jed Lewison take on her latest post-partum bi-partisan binge that ends with:

Until maybe tomorow's follow-up fiasco of some sort comes tumbling out of her.

Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

Nothing to do with moderates.
As far as compromise goes -
I've often offered a compromise - make abortion and death penalty constitutionally illegal, with exception of medical emergency for the former. No one on the left wants to compromise. They would rather have the right to kill innocent babies than to protect convicted murders. I'm not sure why.

Re: RUMOR: CNN apparently saying that Palin will resign
And what exactly do you hope to accomplish by making abortion constitutionally illegal? Do you honestly believe that will end abortion? Did we learn no lessons from prohibition and the failed War on Drugs? Do you think that the US will be a moral nation then and god will raise his protective shields around us once more? Or will we need the constitutional ban on same-sex marriage too?
Many on the left share your desire to see the number of abortions reduced (they'll never be zero), they just don't want to make criminals out of women and health care providers. There are circumstances where abortion should be allowed. But when it comes to learning why a woman might seek an abortion and why it would be a more viable option over others - the right has zero interest in doing that. They just want to check of the 'Make Abortion Illegal" box and move on. Actually, they don't because like the civil unions the Dems dangle in front of the LBGT community, they don't ever want to expend any political capital to make it happen because it's an important wedge issue.
Let's also not forget that about half the country supports it. If there is a "silent majority" of conservatives and the US is truly a center-right nation, then you have quite a few folks in your camp to get on board. It ain't just the lefties that want to keep it legal. My assumption would be that few are at either extreme. I don't think most people want to see no restriction, nor do they want a complete ban. But the fringes on either side won't rest until abortion is completely illegal (even in the case of rape, incest or lack of viability of the fetus or to protect the health of the mother), or all abortion procedures are legal.
Besides, how do you know all the fetuses would be innocent? I mean, by simple numbers we've had to have aborted quite a few sociopaths by now...
