Recommend Router with QoS

I'm looking for a router for a home office that supports QoS. Folding@Home is my main problem as it always saturates my connection when uploading a work unit to the point where even browsing the web is frustrating. I also use Bittorrent. My goal is to not have to quit these apps manually every time they interfere with other activities but still allow them full use of the connection when it is otherwise idle. What are your recommendations?

What have you previously used?

Re: Recommend Router with QoS

I'm currently using a D-Link DI-624. I also have an original Airport Express base station but I'm only using it for the AirTunes feature right now.

Re: Recommend Router with QoS

I have had lots of good experience with Linksys. Right now I'm using a Linksys WRT54G.

I spit upon all things D-Link. Many bad experiences.

Re: Recommend Router with QoS

Bittorrent can bandwidth throttle. Limiting upload speed is almost more important if you have an asymmetric connection like DSL.

How much data are we talking about with a F@H WU?

Re: Recommend Router with QoS

The FAH project WUs vary in size a lot. At present time the average WU size is about 1.5-2 MB.
Note: All WUs are compressed during data transfer.

Re: Recommend Router with QoS

F@H works on modems... are you sure it's F@H saturating your bandwidth with 2MB of data? Possibly 5MB if you have Big WUs on.

Re: Recommend Router with QoS

Little Snitch indicates that Folding is the culprit and when I kill the fah6 process the transmission stops. I do throttle uploads in my BitTorrent client and I should point out that the problem occurs even if BitTorrent isn't running. The problem is that when my upload capacity is saturated, my downloads slow to a crawl. I guess another way to approach the problem would be to throttle F@H's upload rate but as far as I know the client doesn't have that feature.

Edit: my goal here is to not have these uploads interfere with other online activity so if you know of a solution that doesn't involve a new router then I'm open to it.

Re: Recommend Router with QoS

What sort of broadband do you have.

Re: Recommend Router with QoS

ADSL 256 kbps up 1.2 Mbps down. I'm with the only broadband provider in my area, so switching isn't an option. I could upgrade to a higher tier of service (512k/2.4M I think) but that requires them to mess around with the wiring inside my house so I've been putting it off.

I know very little UNIX commands, but apparently you there's a way to (for free) limit bandwidth to specific ports. Just limit F@H to, say, 5 kBps and you're good to go.

Re: Recommend Router with QoS

Thanks, dv, that looks like it'll do the trick.
