Are you ready for some major iPhone UI changes?
So, I should begin by saying that I love my original iPhone, and have had it since a little after launch in 2007. (Although I may get a 3GS soon, as I crave some speed).
While I love the iPhone OS, I can't help but crave something new from Apple. When the iPhone came out, it was light years ahead of everything else. This of course forced the competition to try to come up with something to match the iPhone, and so the Palm Pre and HTC Hero were born. Both of these appear to have really well designed user interface, but I still think that the iPhone OS is better overall. But the gap is defintely getting smaller.
This basically leaves me wanting something new, that again blows everyone else out of the water. I want Apple to integrate some new ideas into the UI. Initially I was thinking they could use concepts from stacks in OS X, but it just hit me that it would be even better to base the new UI on dashboard in OS X. Basically, after turning the phone on you just see a cool background screen, with the date & time, maybe a few small indicator icons in the top menu bar area (carrier, battery, network, etc.) But from there have no application icons. Just very minimal. But, then just like triggering dashboard, your app icons appear. They could give it a sweet animation as it pops into view, maybe the rippling water animation like in dashboard. Once the apps are in view they could keep it the same as far as swiping to the side to access your multiple pages of icons, and then another swipe to move it all out of view again.
Seems like this would be a very natural progression to me. I am just ready for something new.
What do you all think? And, are you happy with where the UI is now, or do you also want something new?

IIRC, what you're describing is the Android home screen minus the VFX.
I'm mostly happy with the UI. I'd like to see better notifications like WebOS and eventually the ability to allow multitasking - even if the number of apps is limited. In any case, not sure why you need a clean home screen. It's not like a Mac where you have multiple windows of multiple apps running simultaneously - the screen is way too small for that. Having to make a gesture to bring up apps to do anything seems unnecessary.
It is an odd thing, but every one who disappears is said to be seen at San Francisco. It must be a delightful city, and possess all the attractions of the next world.

Re: Are you ready for some major iPhone UI changes?
It's not so much that I think having the apps hidden until brought up by a gesture is necessary, I just think it would be a nice interface tweak. I suppose if I think about it for very long, I can guess that Apple probably won't do this as it would add one extra step to launch something, and if anything they want to reduce number of steps. I personally would prefer it I think, but seeing it in action may not work well.
My idea of course is just a first step though, and I'm sure designers out there can think of a better way. I just want to see something new. I want to see the user interface mature and evolve going forward.

Re: Are you ready for some major iPhone UI changes?
I think customization is where Apple could and usually excels...but for some reason the iPhone lacks this to some degree. I want to change the home screen and have mine more minimal, but if other people like the current home screen, you can elect to keep it. I also want to change the colors used in my text message bubbles like I can in iChat. I like being able to customize my wallpaper, but you see the wallpaper so infrequently, it almost makes it pointless. If e could incorparate wallpaper behind application icons instead of just a black background, then this would be nice. However, if it isn;t done right, then the combination of wallpaper and you icons will look too busy and cluttered.
C'mon Apple, give us some customizations.

Re: Are you ready for some major iPhone UI changes?
For anyone still interested in this thread...
While my first choice is still to see a new Apple designed UI for the iPhone (possibly similar to what I describe above), I realize that this might take Apple awhile to design and evolve the OS into. In the mean time I have found a good first step that would satisfy my need for something new.
In researching ideas to customize my iPhone, just found some interesting mock-up photos of possible background screens for the home screen. Instead of the boring basic black background, these themes are tiger and leopard inspired home screens. I think this would be really cool. I also found some jailbreaking tips for changing this and using custom themes. Now, I'm not interested at all in jailbreaking. But I do want something new. So, I think Apple should design some new themes built into the OS, that people can use. Also these could be easily made and shared so we can customize as we see fit. Here are some links...
Tiger:

Leopard: for this next link, you need to scroll down about halfway down the page

Both of these look really cool.
Apple, if you are listening, Themes are what people want

Re: Are you ready for some major iPhone UI changes?
Well this sucks. I'm not sure why the links don't work. I tested them at home in Safari before posting them, and they worked just fine. Trying to either click them in IE here at work or cut and paste them into firefox is similarly not working.
Well the first link should have taken you to a mock up of an iPhone home screen with all the same application icons and positions, but instead of a black background screen, it has the blue screen from tiger or panther. The blue is just a very welcome change and gives depth and a more 3D mac-like look.
The second link is a similar mock-up but with the default leopard screen (time machine look), and then a glossy 3D dock.
There is a program for jailbroken iPhones called SummerBoard, and if you google it you can find many themes people can use if they are willing to jailbreak. I think Apple could expand on this and make some default themes and also encourage users to make and share their own themes with each other. I'll try to find some links that actually work and post them later.
