Airport Express: problem setting up..

Hey guys,

Just bought an airport express for the office I work in, to allow everyone to share a printer wirelessly. We only have 8 computers- usually 3 of which are running at a time, so I figured this would be the most ideal- not to mention wireless from our iTunes to the stereo is a bonus smile

I've been having problems setting up to wirelessly join our current network however, as it doesn't seem to be talking well with the Thomson Speedtouch 780 WL. This is a G wireless device, and I've tried connecting both the N wireless Airport, AND my own G wireless Airport from home to it.

Once I'm finished with the setup process, the Airport utility restarts. Between this time and the time for Utility to come back with "Airport Utility could not find airport after restarting", the LED continues to flash the amber light and I noticed my on screen wireless strength goes from no bars to full and back again over and over.

The Airport then needs to be reset in order to do anything with it from this point.

The Thomson Speedtouch is protected with a WPA personal password. Is there any known issue as to why I'd be having these problems (such as incompatibility of encryption perhaps)?

Any tips would be very much appreciated.
Thank you!

This has been tried, and seems to work, however the wired setup isn't really ideal with our current setup.

Are you thinking that setting up with ethernet  and changing it to wireless later would work?

Re: Airport Express: problem setting up..

I take it the router and the printer isn't co-located. Otherwise, having all three elements together would allow you to connect the Airport Express to the router an be stable, and connect to the printer, and broadcast both wirelessly and through the router.

What is the distance between the airport and the Thompson?
What obstacles are present, ie, walls.

Re: Airport Express: problem setting up..

From the Airport Express Troubleshooting section:

Your AirPort Express Status Light Flashes Amber
The Ethernet cable may not be connected properly, AirPort Express may be out of
range of an AirPort network, or there may be a problem with your Internet service
provider. If you are connected to the Internet with a DSL or cable modem, the modem
may have lost its connection to the network or the Internet. Even if the modem seems
to be working properly, try disconnecting the modem from its power supply, waiting a
few seconds, and then reconnecting it. Make sure AirPort Express is connected directly
to the modem via Ethernet before reconnecting power to the modem.

If your AirPort Express is set up in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS), the WDS link
may be interrupted.
Note: If AirPort Express is set up as a wireless client and the network it's joining is
protected by an access control list (ACL), AirPort Express must be in the ACL to connect
to the network.
For information about the reason the light flashes amber, open AirPort Utility, select
your base station, and then choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu. Enter
the base station password if necessary, and then click Base Station Status to display
information about the flashing light.

Try what I bolded. Also ensure that your router is allowing new stations automatically. If you are using an ACL list you have to add the Airport as a client.

Re: Airport Express: problem setting up..

ACL may very well be the case... This gives me a lot of places to check. Thank you; this is very helpful!!
