Sharing & permissions problem

I recently upgraded my main machine by getting a used G5 and did the switchover by using migration assistant to copy over my boot drive and physically moved my other (data) drive over to the new machine.  After finishing up I saw that the user/admin account from the originaly setup was still there, so I deleted it, leaving only my main account.

The problem I have is that I noticed I needed to authenticate whenever I tried to move or change anything on the data drive.  When I checked Sharing & permissions I saw that "(unknown)", "staff" and "everyone" were the accounts that had access.  I did what I thought was the easy solution and added my admin account and that's when the problem started.  Apparantly I can't delete "(unknown)" from the S&P list.  The only "solution" I found was to copy the problem files to my boot drive, erase the original, and then copy them back.  The problem with that is the time it takes, and that the method still won't remove "*unknown)" from the drives S&P, so I'd have to do a full backup and then restore.  Does anyone have an easier method?

Re: Sharing & permissions problem

I believe that unknown is a required account name in Linux, and therefore the Mac OS.

I'm thinking that an Archive and Install would possibly remedy the problem, though I may be wrong. In any case it's quicker than the copy off, reformat and reinstall that you are contemplating.

If it doesn't work, then you will have to copy off, reformat, reinstall and copy back. One method that will work is to copy your user directory and then put that info back in selectively, allowing your new user information to remain in place while your data and setting can be copied in.

I would also wait for other people to suggest things, as I may be a bit off base.

Have you searched or posted on the Apple forums with this problem?
