Question about forthcoming updates to the iMac
I currently have a G4 1.25 Ghz iMac with 768 MB RAM, an 80 GB hard drive, a 17" screen, and OS 10.4.11. Beyond web browsing, email, and iTunes, most of what I do on it involves video and audio editing using programs like iMovie, Audacity, and MacTubes or Tube TV. This model is now 6 years old (released in 9/2003) and I am planning on replacing it with a new iMac. I do not, however, have a burning, immediate need for one. I have read a few things about how Apple is expected to update iMacs "in the fall", which I guess could mean anywhere from September to December. My question is, does anyone have any idea how "big" the update is likely to be? Is it more likely to be like the one in March, which was relatively minor, or a more substantial one than that. In other words, should I buy now or wait.
Also, does anybody have a more specific projection as to the date of the next update.
Thanks for any help,
MM

Re: Question about forthcoming updates to the iMac
Check here http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/ for the best bet as to when any mac is getting updated.
Right now iMacs are "mid-cycle" so there's no reason to wait (or buy) right now depending on what you're looking for.

Re: Question about forthcoming updates to the iMac
The only reason to wait for purchase is to wait for Snow Leopard right now. Jyri is pretty much on the money.

Re: Question about forthcoming updates to the iMac
Well, technically, if he bought a new Mac now, he'd get Snow Leopard for $10 anyway later which is nothing really.
If you need a computer, get it now. Otherwise wait. As Jyri said, they are in the middle of a cycle so you still have a few months before they even consider updating them. If you can wait until next year, wait until next year because that's the soonest they'll be updated.
Those iMac G4's are nice, but damn the new iMacs are nicer. I say go for it if you really need one. But if your G4 is still happily chugging along, wait it out for say March or April or whenever and get one then. And if they do update in the fall then even better for you.
Usually MacRumors is right on the money, but Apple has been known to surprise people.
The only two times they've done surprise early updates was to add new sizes though. First the 20" then the 24" a few years later. Both came within 2-4 months from the previous update and only added new sizes. I think you're safe though since they really can't get much bigger than 24" in an iMac.

Re: Question about forthcoming updates to the iMac
Thanks for the replies. It sounds like updates won't likely be coming until at least early 2010, so I'll probably go ahead and get one soon.
