New L4D DLC announced
Man, what a coupla days for news. In August yet... it's a conspiracy to keep me from sleep (and worse, gaming/compy building! Grr...)
Valve has announced new DLC for the original Left 4 Dead. The new campaign, dubbed Crash Course, will hit Xbox 360 and Windows PCs next month:
August 4, 2009 - Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life, Portal, Team Fortress, and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced the next major downloadable content (DLC) update for its co-operative zombie thriller, Left 4 Dead (L4D), the #1 new game title on Xbox 360 and PC in 2008.
Entitled "Crash Course," the latest DLC delivers new single-player, multiplayer and co-operative gameplay to both platforms. Targeted for release in September, "Crash Course" bridges the gap between the end of the "No Mercy" campaign and the beginning of "Death Toll" in the original game, expanding the game universe with new locations, new dialogue from the original cast, and an explosive finale
While containing both Survival maps and a Co-operative Campaign, the primary goal of "Crash" is to deliver a complete Versus mode experience in just 30 minutes, resulting in a streamlined version of the game's existing Versus campaigns. A recharge timer for infected teammates has also been added, and item spawn behavior has changed for more balanced gameplay.
"Since the release of Left 4 Dead last November, the design team has been excited about creating new experiences for this world and allowing players to do the same, by releasing much of our internal toolset, like the Survival Pack and Authoring Tools," said Gabe Newell. "We're working with the fans toward the ongoing entertainment value of the product."
Left 4 Dead is an action horror game from Valve that blends the social entertainment experience of multiplayer games such as Counter-Strike and Team Fortress with the dramatic, narrative experience made popular in single player action game classics such as the Half-Life series of games. Released in November of 2008, L4D has earned over 50 industry awards from outlets around the world and sold almost 3 million copies worldwide.
Left 4 Dead: Crash Course is targeted for release in September and will be available free of charge on the PC and for 560 Gamer points on Xbox Live.

So um, when did appreciation for amazing product and continued updates turn into "entitlement", I'm just wondering, but that aside.

Re: New L4D DLC announced
I blame XBL. Really in the old days we didn't call these things DLC or whatever fancy name they use now. We just called them "Mappacks". And back then, you didn't have to pay for them! ZOMG!!
Well, Valve has been nice so far and not charged. Mostly cause of the PC version I think. Prolly do sell a bit more console than PC so if PC gets free stuff then you got screaming console folks wanting the same. Gotta keep the masses happy.

Re: New L4D DLC announced
Epic used to issue new maps in bunches, free. Free content on XBL these days is almost oxymoronic.
(Btw, headset should be here next week. Maybe soon a game machine will be ready, too... can't promise L4D afforded too, but maybe.

Valve 'struggling' with how to make L4D DLC compatible with L4D2
In an interview with Edge magazine, Valve's Chet Faliszek admits that they're still trying to figure out how to make Left 4 Dead DLC compatible with the sequel coming out later this year. When asked if the Crash Course L4D update will be playable for L4D2 owners, Faliszek responded:
Faliszek: We’re still struggling with how interoperability is going to work, right now. When we talk about L4D, the story stuff – there’s actually a lot of character dialogue that’s based in each map.
So you can’t just play it with another set of characters?
Faliszek: No. We’d have to duplicate that, which we’re not against doing. But there’s this thing of the world – these characters wouldn’t be here – how much does that matter? We have a world sketched out and we have an understanding of where everything is and what’s going on, you know, so story-wise it wouldn’t make much sense. But equally there’s a whole group of the fans who don’t care. So we could put new characters in old places and old characters in new places.

Zombie ass, you prevert.
Anyhoo I'm especting the new stuff tomorrow. Anyone have experience trying to use an XBL headset plugged into a PC soundcard as a mic? PC isn't quite ready and L4D isn't hazzed yet, but ju$t maybe...

Re: New L4D DLC announced
Be pricey tho, i'd still prolly consider the 940 BE first. Plus my board would need a bios update to cover the 965 so until Gigabyte does, I dunno. They do tend to update mine still, which is good.
Heh, I still can't take my X2 5000+ BE over 2.8Ghz due to my ancient heatsink. Pondering splurging a lil from my work $$ and getting a new HSF. Debating if its worth the $$$. Really didn't make much this year, company was cutting back hours a lot.

Re: New L4D DLC announced
Firingsquad got essentially the same OC with the predecessor 955BE, predictably. I guess the -65's just a cherrypick that consistenly makes 3.4, if that. Maybe they felt it was time since the basically-same -55 is binning well enough now, so a new model with higher default clock has a place in the product matrix.
Currently ~$245/$200 @Newegg. Looks like the 955's the smart OCer's choice while they last.
Oh, and you kan haz dual core goodness for $50. Semprons are sometimes unlockable in BIOS now. 2x2.7GHz on the cheap IIRC.
Edit: also IIRC, the recent clockspeed boosts come in large part from a shift to 45nm. Need to verify that.

So tomorrow I begin the joyous task of trying to power a 4890 from a 2004 PSU. Joy.
(Oh, wait, I meant a 4830. Yeah, that's totally my plan!

Wonder what the wiring will look like.

Just remember, in versus I suck. As a zombie killer I excel.

Re: New L4D DLC announced
Unfamiliar as I am, I only halfway get those refs. I suspect tho, on the serious end of things, that we two are a couple of the best team players around, whatever the game. Age hath its benefits.
I can still hold my own in DM, but a grasp of tactics since youth plus the much-lessened need to show off, be the best individual are the keys, I suspect. It's nice to be top scorer in co-op, and I have been more than once- but it's not such a biggie as when young. The team comes first.

I agree. Though I tend to be a bit aggressive. Someone has to be the first through the door.

Re: New L4D DLC announced
L4D DLC Was Meant to be Pre-E3 [Aug 19, 2009, 7:32 pm ET]
Shacknews has an explanation from Valve writer Chet Faliszek that Valve actually intended to release the "Crash Course" DLC for the original Left 4 Dead prior to E3, which might have tempered the unhappy reaction to the Left 4 Dead 2 announcement, "but some things held us up." The L4D2 brouhaha might have also been lessened had they mentioned this at the time, but Chet says: "We just didn't think to mention it, we were focusing on other stuff," which he acknowledges was a mistake: "I think if we had that out before the Left 4 Dead 2 announcement, then it would have been clearer for our intentions. Losing the opportunity to get that right hurt us, but I think we made the right choices otherwise."
