Jobs' dirty deals.
We noted a couple of legal matters that Apple was involved with last week. After it was revealed last month that Apple and Google had a "gentlemen's agreement" not to hire each other's employees, it seems Steve Jobs also tried to work out a similar deal with Palm. According to e-mails reviewed by Bloomberg News, then CEO Ed Colligan ultimately rejected the offer. "Your proposal that we agree that neither company will hire the other's employees, regardless of the individual's desires, is not only wrong, it is likely illegal," Colligan told Jobs. If Colligan had made the agreement, it's possible the Pre wouldn't have come together as well as it did. The DOJ began an investigation into the practice of making such agreements earlier this summer.

I gotta say I think that is some really dirty dealing. Noncompete agreements are bad enough but at least the employee goes into the deal knowing what's up. Jobs' way is far worse, like a secret black list.
"and it's not surprising that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

Uncool for sure. This is when we need bratboy for the legalities of this. If this was illegal then I would think this is pretty black & white and would be prosecuted accordingly.

I could understand an agreement that they wouldn't actively recruit the other's employees, but not hiring does go a bit far. A few folks have told me that working at 1 Infinite Loop is cool, but can be rather stressful at times. With engineers still in demand, keeping them in one place isn't easy.
It is an odd thing, but every one who disappears is said to be seen at San Francisco. It must be a delightful city, and possess all the attractions of the next world.

At least Apple is liberal as far individuality. My local Apple Store has a dude with a REAL 6" mohawk, multicolored. I doubt MS would have hired him. Their are some other "different" looking people their as well, with tats, whatever. I guess this helps their "hip" image with Gen Y? You know it's really about the bottom line with everything a business does, Apple just does a better job disguising it.
