Re: Anime is so weird!

I didn't mean to convey the impression that I haven't watched the things which I condemn. I have tried sitting through and episode of Cowboy Bebop, and a friend of mine once forced me to suffer through several episodes of Samurai Champloo. The utter pointlessness of the stories and characters was hard to take. Just thinking about it makes me angry.

And I was a huge fan of Heavy Metal. Been reading it since I was a small child. Still have issue number one from 1977, as  a matter of fact.

By the way, does anybody know what the Hell "Champloo" means?

Re: Anime is so weird!

I got about halfway through one of them Patlabor movies. I suppose I should try to find it and watch the rest. Anybody seen the new, computer-animated remake fo the Brave Raydeen series? It's quite strange.

I haven't watched the other 2 series, I'll have to check them out. I did watch the OVAs and movies, but I wouldn't recommend them.

Re: Anime is so weird!

I love the classics like Neon Genesis, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, etc. I have also liked the GITS tv series, ROD the TV, Cowboy Bebop, Lain, and all things Hayao Miyazaki.

But I gotta say, dont pass up Fullmetal Alchemist. I saw the first episode and thought it was awful. I tolerated watching a few more episodes with friends for sake of the group. I totally get anyone who is turned off to it at first, BUT, the story builds and builds upon itself and waiting for the last few episodes of the series on cartoonnetwork was intense. It was seriously really good, one of the few recent shows that I thought was worth the hype. I'm a big fan.

You might be interested to know that they're remaking Fullmetal Alchemist. I think they're planning on having the overall storyline follow the manga, unlike the first series which split off at the middle.

The honda thread reminded me:

Initial D.

I don't love it, but I read some of it once. All about drift racing. It's like watching Tokyo Drift but... less idiotic explosions and southern drawl and more awkwardly drawn faces.

Re: Anime is so weird!

Are Initial D and Great Teacher Onizuka somehow related? For some reason the two are juxtaposed in my mind.

It's funny what Initial D mania has done to the Levin Trueno/RWD Corolla market. What were once considered nothing more than crappy little Japanese cars are suddenly impossible to find, and if you do find one, it's got a carbon fiber hood, 30-series tires, and a fried clutch.

There is no direct story link but both series are pretty counter-culture themed and targeted at male audiences.

Re: Anime is so weird!

Also, FLCL (Fooly Cooly) is great.

Even though its produced by cartoon network, I think Big O is a brilliant combo of Ultraman/Batman with Prisoner style psychedelia.  Plus the Flash Gordon ripoff theme song+++.

Most of the Slayers stuff and all things Ghost in the Shell are excellent. I would also state that Azumanga Daioh should be required viewing for anyone with an interest in anime, though it is hardly sci fi.

Re: Anime is so weird!

I've seen Ghost in the Shell. It's exactly that sort of boring, slow-paced stuff that I'm hoping to avoid. Made for a great PlayStation game, but the movie? Slllllooooooowwwwww and boring.

Say, um, does anybody know where I can get cheesed?

Re: Anime is so weird!

I agree. Ghost in the Shell was dullsville, it had the ultra-tuned look that Akira had, but the story was just art-fag city.

I always preferred the pulp action of Space Cruiser Yamato.

Off of the mainstream:
Gunslinger Girl
smurf Baby
(anybody have any idea if either of these have been licensed for American distribution?)

Pure weird factor:
Dragon Half
All-Purpose Cultural Cat-Girl Nuku Nuku.

Agreement all-around on Miyazaki, but those who criticize Nausica haven't seen Castle in the Sky or Porco Rosso.  Miyazaki can be hit or miss, but nearly anything he touches winds up at least looking beautiful.

Re: Anime is so weird!

Finished watching Vexille. Lots of corny dialogue, such as "...if we have our spirit, no one can ever take away our humanity."

The visuals were sure impressive, though.

Yes. It's horrible. FWIW, there's at least a few dozen mangas out there that handle inappropriate sexual relations between military leaders, clones and I MUSTN'T RUN AWAY stereotypes that are far more enjoyable in scope than that bizarre, low budget hentai.

On a completely unrelated note, YouTube up some Detective Conan. There's a reason it's been running in Japan for 13 seasons with no signs of stopping. It's because it doesn't suck.

Oh, and for Cowboy Bebop... which episode did you watch? If you want a coherent, Ed-less, purposeful experience of the series, just do this:

Ballad of Fallen Angels
Jupiter Jazz Pt 1 & 2
Real Folk Blues Pt 1 & 2

Five episodes, like watching a short movie, gives you anything you would've wanted for the Spike/Vicious/Julia character development without any fluff. Actually, speaking of the movie, it's worth a hunt down, too, actually.
