Best driving games for GMA950 iMac?

I've played 4X4 Evo2 to the point where it's just not challenging anymore. Ford Racing 2, on the other hand, is too challenging, and not a very good game.

So I want recommendations, people. In your experience, which older driving games should I be looking for?

Thanks...

You could give Redline a go.

Re: Best driving games for GMA950 iMac?

Yeah, every few years I forget how frustrating Redline is, and I re-install it and am reminded of why I don't like it. Just simple things like getting it configured to accept inputs from my Logitech dual-analog gamepad seem to be impossible; Steering it'll do, but the damned thing refuses to let me configure the other stick for acceleration and braking. So that leaves me with using the buttons for the gas pedal and brakes. Gas and brakes that are either on or off, with no degree of subtlety possible, do not make for driving fun.

Thanks for the suggestion,  though.

I'm wondering how recent of a Need for Speed sequel would work on my machine.

It must be not too hard, and work with your game pad? You ruled out everything!

Ford Racing is not too bad, just get used to it.

Different driving games have different physics so cars handle differently.

For Redline, you should ask for help in the Ambrosia forums.

Try some demos here:

There's Total Immersion Racing.

I'm talking about Ford Racing 2. It's very frustrating, because you can't unlock many cars or tracks unless you're able to master endless "line driving" and "time out" challenges, which are just way too difficult and not very fun.

Thanks though, maybe I will ask for help on the Ambrosia forums...

Not what's asked for, but up your alley anyway.

The Dreamcast’s 10-year anniversary just got a little more exciting. Redspotgames, a publisher that thankfully didn’t get the memo about the system’s demise, has just announced a new game for the Sega Dreamcast.

That’s right; Rush Rush Rally Racing will be hitting Amazon and eBay’s virtual store shelves this October for the low price of $22. I can’t believe I’m actually typing these words in 2009, but you can pre-order this Dreamcast game now via the publisher’s website.

Rush Rush Rally Racing is an old-school, 2D, top-down, arcade-racing game for up to four players. The trailer, which you can watch after the jump, boasts “No realistic backgrounds. No sponsored cars. Only fun, retro gameplay.” Who knows if RRRR will be any good or not, but the gameplay in the trailer does look pretty darn entertaining.

Embedded YT player below text.

Here’s a list of features direct from the developer (their words, not ours!) if you’re dying to know more about the game:

- Single-player grand prix mode with four difficulty levels

- Three multiplayer modes to enjoy with up to four players

- Five race cars to choose from

- 10 Grand Prix race tracks

- 9 additional multiplayer race tracks

- Awesome soundtrack by Black Device

- Autosave to VMU (any port, file uses just 2 blocks)

- Region-free

- Rumble pack support

- Compatible with original Dreamcast pads, arcade stick, and third-party controllers

- Supports PAL (50/60 Hz), NTSC, and VGA displays

- Configurable controls and many other options

- Animated cut scenes

- Plus even more unlockable content!

- New: Online high score!

(I know Ear'll be dying to play it, too wink)

What a coinkydink.

[In this ten-year Dreamcast retrospective, Gamasutra looks back at Sega's last effort in the console market through interviews with former president of Sega of America Bernie Stolar, former Sega of America COO Peter Moore, former SOA Vice President of Communications Charles Bellfield, and former vice president of Electronic Arts, Bing Gordon.]

For a console that broke entertainment retail records, made the Guinness Book of World Records, and laid the blueprints for today's online-centric consoles, it's striking to think the Dreamcast's lifespan was shorter than nearly any console in video game history.

Is the Star Wars Racer game only for Classic?  Because I'd recommend that over any sports car game.

Re: Best driving games for GMA950 iMac?

Another one at Bitmob.

Q&A: Former Sega President on Dreamcast's Failure, Pranks Against Sony, His Ouster...

Sometimes, it can take a good decade to get a decent interview.

It's OK -- we're patient people.

In 1999, Bernie Stolar's Japanese bosses let him go as President and COO of Sega of America -- right before the launch of a system he helped create.

Now, 10 years later, he talks to Bitmob about his ouster, how Sega dropped the ball on the Dreamcast after he left, EA's attempted bullying of Visual Concepts, what he thinks about today's Sega (it's not good), and a huge corporate prank he pulled on Sony -- one of the greatest the industry's ever seen.

Bitmob: If we could send you back in time, with the benefit of hindsight, what would you do to make the Dreamcast survive and thrive?

Bernie Stolar: It’s called money. And a commitment from the company.

When [former Sega President Hayao] Nakayama was pushed out of the company, the company really changed.

Bitmob: How so?

BS: The heart and soul of Sega came from him, and he really believed that software drove hardware -- which is true. He also believed that if you’re going to be a major competitor in the gaming world, you needed to own the hardware platform.

Bitmob: So what did Sega do wrong after you guys left?

BS: When Nakayama was pushed out and when I was pushed out, I think what took place was, Mr. [Isao] Okawa, who then became the chairman of the company -- he was an investment banker from CSK [Holdings Corporation].... I don’t believe he was committed to the hardware. He just believed it should be a software company.
