Time for uki's heart attack
Disney Adds Seropian and Wideload [Sep 08, 2009, 09:48 am ET]
CNBC.com has news that Bungie co-founder Alex Seropian has joined Disney Interactive Studios to oversee in-house video game development. The move also includes the acquisition of Wideload Games (Stubbs the Zombie & Hail to the Chimp), the studio Seropian formed in 2004, but financial terms are not being revealed. The article speaks of convergence between casual and core games, "Look at Pixar," they quote Seropian saying. "They are successfully making films that appeal to both families and film nerds – and that opportunity exists in games." There's no word on how Disney's recent acquisition of Marvel will play into this, since that deal is not officially finalized yet.
All your Stubbs are belong to Eisner. BC may not survive this... times are truly tight in games.

CNBC adds that Warren Spector joined in 2007. Deus Ex 4, now with sidekick Goofy... smelling salts all 'round.
Sturner, I'll be needing a kaishaku-nin.

Eisner!? He is no more.
STEVE JOBS unofficially controls Disney. He saved Disney with Pixar, and he's the single biggest share holder.
But this does mean one thing, I think. No more real Marathon games ever.
The good thing about it could be that games based on Pixar movies don't suck anymore.

Re: Time for uki's heart attack
That is cute. Wonder how long before we kan haz Marathon MP maps set in Stubbsworld?
(Anyway, I doubt you could get Greg Kirkpatrick out of his real job for writing duties; and as I understood it, overall story outlines came from Jason, fleshing out and dialogue to be written by Greg- so the team was basically split by '02 anyhow. Depends on what you consider real, I guess... and anyhoo modern graphics, sound, physics et al are so different, a new one might hardly be recognizable as Marathon. M2 on the 'Box still makes me dizzy when I look up, in that 2.5D engine).

So the interview I heard recently was with an impostor?

But Steve hates (non-iPhone) games!

That would follow. Suppose he'll push to buy Bungie next? Steve's big on revenge.
He might make an exception for Halo... except, darn it, MS owns that IP. Stalemate.

He's not Disney's CEO any more.

Yet all Pixar movies have had an associated video game (maybe now they won't suck)
Or maybe Wideload will make Marvel video games.

Bungie plus Wideload equals... what?

Re: Time for uki's heart attack
Stori[es] at Gamasutra.
Chicago
when Alex Seropian left the Windy City. And Los Angeles exploded into flames when he arrived. Or at least that's how the games industry veteran interpreted the rain and forest fires in the respective cities the day he moved from the Midwest to the West Coast.
The affable co-founder of Halo purveyor Bungie Studios and, more recently, the founder of Chicago-based Wideload Games this week announced that he'd be taking the creative reins across all of Disney Interactive Studios following Disney's acquisition of his studio.
From the outside, it appears to be a drastic move – Seropian is best known for his entrepreneurial and independent, creative streak. He helped create games like Myth and Halo, as well as Stubbs the Zombie and Hail to the Chimp. Now, instead of leading a 25-person studio in the Midwest, he'll be in charge of the creative direction of six development studios that reside within the biggest entertainment company on the planet.
It'll be a big adjustment for Seropian -- or will it? "I have no intention of adjusting," he said, deadpan, before bursting out laughing. He's only half joking. "I feel that's part of the reason why I'm here at Disney. There's a real opportunity to bring that knowledge of what I've been learning and developing over many years over to Disney, to do some really cool things. This is an opportunity that people don't get."
..
One of the big DIS projects currently brewing, now under the watchful eye of Seropian, is Austin, Tex.-based Warren Spector and Junction Point's mysterious game, rumored to be codenamed "Epic Mickey."
While Seropian is gallivanting with his pals out at the Mickey Mouse club, he said the Wideload team he left back in Chicago knew that one long-term goal was to make original games and get them on a worldwide stage. Wideload is more than okay with the change.
That, and -- according to Seropian -- the Chicago crew is holding onto hopes that it can get into Disneyworld for free.

Just to be clear, this is almost exactly what happened to Pixar. And look where Disney's going with that...

Pixar saved Disney. I'll keep saying that forever.
Will Seropian save Disney games? Or, save movie based games?

I agree 100% with you. Do you think we'd be getting anything other than this schlock if it weren't for them?

Re: Time for uki's heart attack
Timeframe is another variable.
I'm sure one reason Stan Lee's happy is because he's now not only muy riche, he's old enough he'll pass before current game license agreements expire. Spidey, Hulk and more won't be fighting or palling with Mickey for some years, say ~2017. He's set, and won't see the day when...
I'm more looking forward to what might come out of their other devs and properties. A few are more core-gamer oriented. Warren Spector + Seropian = win, if left alone.
