what is this other solution you mentioned?
Last year Alienware showed a gaming rig with a very widescreen display that was truly curved, phospors and glass alike. I'm not sure whether it ever entered production, but it was shown at a trade show. It was at AnandTech, so searching the Trade Show section would likely turn it up.
Rather than power multiple small monitors, why not just make a real big one so there is no seam? or have someone figure a way to make a structurally sound multi-monitor with no seam set up. I assume it's the structural integrity most people are worried about. I know i wouldn't want to pay 5k + to have my six or more monitors come tumbling down.
Nonstandard elements, both phosphors and glass. Not economical, & a niche market- existing tooling limits max size, and there's already a push on to standardize so as to reduce glass costs, e.g. make all medium-large displays 16:9 1080p, rather than continue with 16:10 1920x1200 for PCs. Standardization saves money.

This is a cool thing, and if I had 6 1600p projectors set up seamlessly, IMAX source material, and the six-way Crossfire needed to drive games (other than WoW and console ports) on this beast, I would probably never leave my house.

This seems to be true on the TN side of things, but afaik, all similar sized PVA and IPS panels are 1920x1200. Software-wise, I'm aware of three games that force the 16:9 ratio (black bars). They are: Assassin's Creed, Mirror's Edge, and that pirate game I downloaded yesterday. It's annoying, but thankfully, there are hacks to get it back to 16:10.
Personally, I prefer 16:10 (especially for general computing tasks), and hope it never goes away.

I'm sick of widescreen. When are they going to make the monitors TALLER again?
