I think you completely mis-understood arguments along that line.

I was right.
I just heard the song from Fox, went to look at the TV - Glenn Beck was starting.

Nothing.
I wasn't asking about the establishment clause.
I was asking if they were more or less of a captive audience?

Why would the level of "captive audience"-ness depend on the speech?

The level doesn't depend upon the speech.

You know what I'm asking and why I'm asking it, pretending you don't doesn't cut it.

The obvious point is that they are a captive audience with no choice, and that it is inappropriate to use public funds for political indoctrination of a captive audience that has no choice but to participate.

I don't think it is a huge deal, but it is still not appropriate.

Re: wonderful video

How dare these children be taught the name of the President !

Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim.  Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet."  They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

Perhaps it's inappropriate (the song itself is terrible) but it doesn't make any sense to speak in terms of a "captive audience" because that pertains to content that is impermissible under the First Amendment.  Yes, children at school are a "captive audience" in most every situation.

I honestly do not remember hearing anything but wonderful stuff about 'the president' when I was a child in public school (Reagan).  There wasn't a dumb song, but we're really splitting hairs at that point.

Re: wonderful video

It also seems the concert the kids were doing was promoting a book the teacher wrote on Obama.
Her book was clearly on display at the event.

Exploitation of children anyone?

Should a public school teacher use their students to promote their book?

Re: wonderful video

One song that the children were taught quotes directly from the spiritual "Jesus Loves the Little Children," though Jesus' name is replaced with Obama's: "He said red, yellow, black or white/All are equal in his sight. Barack Hussein Obama."

Do you have a problem with Obama being deified like that?

Here's the battle hymn of the republic modified -

Hello, Mr. President we honor you today!
For all your great accomplishments, we all doth say "hooray!"

Hooray, Mr. President! You're number one!
The first black American to lead this great nation!

Hooray, Mr. President we honor your great plans
To make this country's economy number one again!

Hooray Mr. President, we're really proud of you!
And we stand for all Americans under the great Red, White, and Blue!

So continue ---- Mr. President we know you'll do the trick
So here's a hearty hip-hooray ----

That goes well beyond teaching his name - it is without question political endorsement.

Re: wonderful video

"Ring around the roses" is supposedly about the Plague. Nursery rhymes often have very dark undertones. Then of course there's Christmas carols. All of these are sung in school.

I think the thing to do is LIGHTEN UP.

Actually no, most christmas carols are no longer sung in schools.
For the most part, only the completely secular ones are sung - like Rudolph and Santa Claus is coming to town.
That's even becoming rare now.

They passed out the brown shirts to the kids after the video was made.

Does that mean they don't have to wear the red white and blue ones shrub shoved down their throats?

I'll make a deal with resedit and Daddyo...when more than a dozen classrooms do this, I'll fly to the location and protest for a week.  Until then, don't exaggerate the event.

So this is occurring at the direction of the State?  At the direction of the President?  At the direction of the school?

If you want to play with the big boys around here, why not drop the sarcasm and offer a thoughtful, reasoned argument for once?  Surely you're due for one by now.

Reagan talked to school kids, as did Bush1, Clinton and Bush2.
So they were all out of line?

This thread is about a public school teacher who had her kids sing two songs praising Obama while promoting a book she wrote, not about Obama addressing the students. That's a different thread.

I don't think this should be encouraged, but this seems more stupid than anything (and I think it's pretty smurfy to distribute a video tape of young children on the internet without parent permission).

Holy smurf!

Has anyone read the comments people have left on YouTube regarding the video Daddyo posted in the opening post? Some of the most hateful racist comments I have ever read.

There are a LOT of nutcases out there.
