Seriously - I suspect the reason for the GPS coordinates is they are using some GIS application - county and state governments are big on GIS now.

Which kind of data? Be specific.

It's only legal in a few states, of course the number is going to be larger.
Although you probably will find the same is true for heterosexual couples as well.

However, the question remains: Do you want the government to have a list of every gay person in the country at their fingertips, including address? Can you think of a few ways that information could be abused?

I was going to mention that the GPS coordinates are probably going to be used to develop better geocoding algorithms. You can already get the geographic coordinates for a good number of addresses using geocoding.

Its these types of really crazy and stupid people who feel everything is the govt fault
and they have been largely ignored in politics till now. It seems the panic over having

The location of a residence is hardly "private data".

In the age of Google Maps, Satellite view and Street View, being paranoid about OMFGTEHGUVAMENTKNOWSWHEREILIVE!!11!!11!! indicates a clinical problem.

I already stated that it probably is for use in creating GIS data sets, sets that can then be easily used with other GIS data sets.
However, it is information they do not need to collect to fulfill the purpose of the census, and there are many other things on the questionnaire that make many people feel uncomfortable.

And to be honest, I'm not sure I want census collected demographics available as GIS data.

The incredible, mind numbing stupidity of the whole thing is that the right is scared of the left going totalitarian when the only defenders of civil liberties we have are on the left.
The right is almost monolithic in it's support for greater government police and surveillance powers.
Sometime I suspect it's a case of the proverbial thief who always locks his door. The right, knowing it's own strong leaning towards police state tactics simply assumes the left has the same aims..

I suppose out in the woods this doesn't apply because lack of cell tower coverage, but if you carry your phone, they already know or can instantly access all they need for these alleged nefarious dark intentions.
