Seriously - I suspect the reason for the GPS coordinates is they are using some GIS application - county and state governments are big on GIS now.

It's amazing how many data sets I can download now from local government.

However, the point that the collected data could be mis-used is a point that should not be overlooked.

Well, both Cheney and Wolfowitz were clamoring for a war with Iraq before they were part of the Bush Admin, so by extension, of the 1% policy, Iran was next.

Not to mention, "strong support" came from manufactured "evidence". And 'a failure of intelligence'.

For example:

Re: Beware the census!!!

The fact is that data collected from previous census has been used by government for dastardly deeds (the rounding up of Japanese after Pearl Harbor).

We need to learn from our history.

Government just can't be trusted to have that kind of data.

Which kind of data? Be specific.

Why do you keep coming to such completely ridiculous conclusions?

What you asked for is specified in the video that started this thread.
Stating so is in no way endorsement of everything in the video, which mostly is a hash of different clips with no context around them.

U.S. Census shows larger than expected number of same-sex couples.

So...do you support amending the Constitution to do away with the census?

Isn't it necessary for apportioning representation?

No.

Yes.
However, the questions they plan to ask go far beyond that purpose, and they do not need GPS data. Address should be sufficient.

Re: Beware the census!!!

From your link:

Approximately 150,000 same-sex couples indicated to the U.S. Census Bureau that they live together in some form of marital relationship. This figure is many times more than the number of gay marriages and civil unions that have been performed in this country.

Duh.
It's only legal in a few states, of course the number is going to be larger.
Although you probably will find the same is true for heterosexual couples as well.

However, the question remains: Do you want the government to have a list of every gay person in the country at their fingertips, including address? Can you think of a few ways that information could be abused?

They wouldn't have a list of "every gay person in the country," only those that chose to answer your hypothetical question.  It would be impossible to determine who "every gay person in the country" is, though many right-wing religious groups would be terrified at the notion.

Can you think of a few ways that information could be abused?

No, not really.  More accurate junk mail?

Hopefully they use it to correct maps. The MapQuest/Google directions for practically all of the rural areas around here are grossly incorrect… like miles off for some people.

I was going to mention that the GPS coordinates are probably going to be used to develop better geocoding algorithms. You can already get the geographic coordinates for a good number of addresses using geocoding.

I already stated that it probably is for use in creating GIS data sets, sets that can then be easily used with other GIS data sets.
However, it is information they do not need to collect to fulfill the purpose of the census, and there are many other things on the questionnaire that make many people feel uncomfortable.

And to be honest, I'm not sure I want census collected demographics available as GIS data.
That's not what the census is for.

Funny to see such concern coming from someone who was so comfortable with all the domestic spying and snooping the Bush admin was up to.
The incredible, mind numbing stupidity of the whole thing is that the right is scared of the left going totalitarian when the only defenders of civil liberties we have are on the left.
The right is almost monolithic in it's support for greater government police and surveillance powers.
Sometime I suspect it's a case of the proverbial thief who always locks his door. The right, knowing it's own strong leaning towards police state tactics simply assumes the left has the same aims..

I wonder if resedit thinks that these census data sets contain discrete explicit data.

Are you suggesting the Japanese wouldn't have been interned if there hadn't been census data?

If they hadn't had the census they would've used tax information. If they hadn't had tax information they'd have used housing registries. If they hadn't had housing registries they'd have used the frigging phone book. If they hadn't had the phone book they would've used the army to go door-to-door.

It wasn't the census that caused the internment, it was the decision to make it happen.

Sheesh.
