Protests over forced swine flu injections

http://wcbstv.com/topstories/swine.flu. … 16352.html

They're upset over an ultimatum from the health department.

Workers are being told to either get the swine flu vaccine or lose their jobs.

New York is the first state in the country to mandate flu vaccinations for its health care workers. The first doses of swine flu vaccine will be available beginning next week. Much of it is reserved for state health care workers, but there is growing opposition to required innoculations.

Health care workers in Hauppauge screamed "No forced shots!" as they rallied Tuesday against the state regulation requiring them to roll up their sleeves.

This one's not even a tough call. We have a vaccine that isn't proved, has a history of causing more problems than it solves, and a law that forces people into a medical procedure against their will. I hope they hold out until the state gets slapped down.

If we were in the middle of an actual emergency, it's likely these people would voluntarily take the vaccine. However, we aren't; and these people are being forced into something they clearly don't want.

I think the idea is to not wait until we have an emergency.

I agree.
This should not be forced on people.

I don't see it as any different than mandatory vaccinations in the military.

Re: Protests over forced swine flu injections

I don't agree with it being mandatory.  It's an extreme reaction to a legitimate concern.  My guess is that if these protests are more than a minority and gain any sort of coverage, the requirement will be shrunk to a smaller group or dropped.

Care to back up those claims?  Especially the "more problems than it solves" bit.
The vaccine has already gone through a number of studies and uses the same technology and development process as the common, yearly flu vaccine.  It's a different target strain, but the risks remain minimal.  We have essentially 60-70 years of study regarding this vaccine.  It's quite safe.

Re: Protests over forced swine flu injections

Grandma stopped getting yearly flu shot because she always had flu like systems afterwards.
Her doctor said it wasn't uncommon.

But that's anecdotal and therefore worthless.

Interesting -

No one can deny the dangers of vaccines. The measles, mumps, rubella (German measles) and polio vaccines, all contain live but weakened viruses. Although health officials tell you that polio has been wiped out in the US since 1979, they often fail to mention that all recorded cases of polio since that time are actually caused by the polio vaccine.

And don't forget, vaccinations cause autism!

So your source is implying that the handful of cases 'caused' by a vaccine outweigh the huge number prevented.

HURRRRR

Some people died in the 1970s due to swine flu vaccinations...I can't blame someone for not wanting to be shot up with something when there has been so little time to test the new recipe.

Makes sense to me. I, for one, will not be getting a swine flu (err, H1N1) vaccine thanks to the doctors on this board. I'm horrified there has been no advancement in vaccination or other healthcare in 30 years.

I don't know what my source implies, but what I'm outright stating is that receiving it should be choice.

If you choose to receive it and I do not, then you don't have to worry about catching it from me, do you?

25 people out of millions. All flu vaccine has the potential for a (literally) one in a million fatal reaction.

And your source has bugger all to do with what you're outright stating.

So be explicit: what was the point of quoting what you did?

Re: Protests over forced swine flu injections

Is there any evidence that this flu spreads through health care workers when standard precautions are taken?

Demonstration that vaccinations do have side effects that many people do not want to risk, especially for a disease that isn't fatal in their demographic (unless NY health has a tendency to hire high school students).

And this fearmongering about polio  vaccine is support?

And do you realize that the mandatory vaccines are for people who have regular contact with the people who are at high risk?

so 1 in a million chance of vaccine related death...

Its currently a 1 in 500,000 chance of dying from the swine flu.

I'll take my chances with the vaccine.

Re: Protests over forced swine flu injections

If I were being forced to I'd be in the HR department making it quite clear that if and when I got sick from it, as I have yet to NOT happen, I expected my PL to be apply but NOT deducted from my total. After all, I got sick as a requirement of my job.

Refusing steps to increase herd immunity is stupid.

Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim.  Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet."  They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.
