Re: Battle Hymn of the Republic

roads reduce corruption by giving people legitimate opportunity to work elsewhere.

Look at Rome, they were known as the road builders and never had corruption.

Oh wait, nevermind.

You really should review it then.

The Army COIN course covered it quite well thanks. But if you are interested in learning more about the situation over here, it really would be beneficial to study up on Pashtunwali. Its a good intro as to why this war is quite a bit different than the one in Vietnam.

Studying aside, translating from academic COIN to practical COIN is a complex process. Having done both, it took a bit of time and experience to become proficient in working with Afghan counterparts here on the ground. Once a good relationship is built, it becomes much easier to provide a positive influence so that they can become better able to protect Afghanistan on their own. With more mentors, which is what McC requested, the program should continue to get better.

You mean 'advisors'. 'More' equals esacalation. Men, money and mayhem.

Its actually moving to a partnership, where mentors will live and work with Afghan security forces under the same living conditions. While it is an escalation to send more, it is what is needed to make sure the Afghans have the resources and expertise they need in order to take over the job themselves.

Steyr's got the highest morale in all of Afghanistan.

The universally positive spin is proof-positive he doesn't know what he's talking about. Talk to guys who go in-country, and even if they're optimistic they acknowledge the many problems.

It's becoming pretty apparent that the Afghans, by and large, aren't interested. I'm guessing it's because they've seen a few other invasions, followed by the fall of puppet governments, to actually believe this is going to be any different. You really can't blame them for hedging their bets.

This isn't Iraq, where you actually have some semblance of nationalism and a political class. This is a place that, as two other former super powers have discovered, is an ungovernable quagmire.
