Well I think it's smart, this will make it hard for going at war for Obama after he received this price.

It'd be hard for him to do that, anyway, if only for lack of funds.

He's eight months into his first term. This is ridiculous. Nobel Peace Prizes have always had a political aftertaste, but this is nothing but a gratuitous jab at the Bush administration. They might as well have issued a press release saying, "we never liked GW Bush. You're not getting our prize. Nah-nah-nanah-nah."

I'm sure Obama will feel obliged to declare this a great honour. It isn't. It's an insult to him, too.

As much as I want to be positive about Obama, this strikes me as pretty much insane.

Re: Obama wins Nobel

An especially crazy detail about this: the deadline for nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize is February 1st, which means he was only president for about a week and a half when his name was submitted.

Re: Obama wins Nobel

I saw an interesting column today about this, in which it was suggested that Obama should refuse to accept the prize. He could say he hasn't had time to achieve the goals he's set out, but he's very appreciative, etc. Might score back some points.

Personally my take is that all this is a reflection of the relief much of the world feels that Bush isn't president anymore.

Re: Obama wins Nobel

Its like those cannucks in DOA said: Talk Minus Action = Nobel Peace Prize.

Except Obama aint just no action- that guy increased military spending beyond Bush's budget and called enough air strikes that even the military got concerned of the death rates of targets versus civilians in the body counts.

Hey, winning the Nobel aint no big thing if you got cool hope posters and stuff.

Oh, I'll bet every US president gets nominated every year.

Hm, fair point.

Weren't there rumours that Dubya got nominated?

I made a joke about it elsewhere but I'm already finding people posting this is a sign he's the antichrist.
A few call it the lefty of the moment award.

In general though, most people seem to just think it's wrong and too soon since he's basically done nothing deserving it.

Yup.  It is just SILLY.  And from a political perspective I think it merely highlights the lack of real progress he has made in his agenda.

I also think it highlights just how horrific the Bush years were.

I hope hope hope he doesn't accept this thing. As usual I hate that the foam-at-the-mouth righties are setting the agenda, but let's face it, this is going to send them into collective psychosis.

Re: Obama wins Nobel

It's interesting how many think it's a statement about Bush.
I'm not sure who that reflects worse on though, Bush or the Nobel people.
I guess it's besides the point, it's probably a negative to Obama overall if he accepts.

While I appreciate the reflexive jab at the right, the left posters here so far haven't thought much of it either.
Can you honestly say your opinion of him won't go down if he accepts it?

I think it reflects badly on Bush. It really shows how badly he tarnished America's image when the next guy gets the frigging Nobel just for making some positive-sounding speeches.

Nah, I don't think it will. He didn't even know about it, much less lobby for it (as Bush is rumoured to have done). They gave it to him. All things being equal I'd say why not take it. Not sure why my opinion of him should be affected.

The Nobel Peace Prize is a joke, has been so for decades, with some really bad people getting it for transitory, nonexistent accomplishments. It's really about a "spirit" they identify people with, rather than accomplishments. That's just the way it is.

Re: Obama wins Nobel

Didn't deserve it. What a waste of a prestige award. When President Carter won his for his peace efforts he had brokered the Camp David Accords. Obama hasn't done anything remotely close as that.

Goddammit.

This is what political posturing smells like, isn't it? Saw on /b/ first thing this morning and on the way to work while listening to NPR there was some EU leader simultaneously praising Obama while saying "it carries responsibility for future decisions". This is seriously a strong-arm and the administration is falling for it. GAH
