But large parts of France were Papist.

Re: America's conservatives, making the Bible better
I believe the word you're looking for is "Catholic."
Correct me if I'm wrong, but...
"Papist" would be, at best, archaic and outdated, not unlike referring to a Muslim as a "Mohammedan." At worst, "papist" is a slur.

No. I'm not looking for the word "Catholic". "Catholic" refers to the Church Universal. I'm looking for the word "Papist."
Real theological differences existed between the Lutheran and Roman Catholic churches. Blood was shed. Luther believed that the Pope was the antichrist.

They may call themselves conservatives, but religious conservatives would never dream of altering the Bible.
Now, if what they are really doing is fixing translational issues and the article is just putting a spin on the project, that's different.
However, I'm not aware of any "liberal bias" translation issues in the standard scholarly translations (RSV, NRSV, NASB) - but the NIV, what most churches use because it is easier to read, has expressed interest in doing future versions that do things like more gender neutral translations when the source is not gender neutral, so perhaps they aim to produce an easy to read translation to take the place of NIV.
I wouldn't worry about it too much.

And don't forget the sack of Magdeburg, 20 May 1631. Only 16% of the citizens survived. Done to a Protestant city, by a Protestant army under the direction of a Catholic King. It was a watershed in Europe, and established a standard of not talking about religion.

They're not fixing any translational issues - they're altering from the KJV and not using actual original sources or any sort of scholarly methods.

This book would seem to offer a balanced treatment of Catholic and Protestant literacy rates

I thought Conservapedia was shown to be a hoax site.
Just FYI - hoax site or not, it is at most fringe group, and altering the Bible does not fit the classic definition of conservative.

"Caedite eos! Novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius"
Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

Re: America's conservatives, making the Bible better
1380: Wycliffe's New Testament followed by the old, a few years later
1517: Martin Luther issues his 95 Theses
1522: Luther's New Testament
1534: Luther's Old Testament
1534: Henry VIII breaks with Roman Catholic church
1537: Tyndale's English translation
1546: Council of Trent bans vernacular translations
1563: 39 Articles establishes Anglican doctrine
1564: Shakespeare born
1594: Titus Andronicus quarto
1611: King James Version
1616 Shakespeare died
1623: First Folio published
In truth, many of the mass literacy drives were products of later Reformed Protestant sects, by which time the Catholic Church had loosened its policies on the vernacular. And Protestant literacy was often limited to the Bible, while Roman Catholic literacy was not.

btw - it looks like conservapaedia itself is not a hoax site, just numerous articles on it are - admittedly written by liberals to mock the site, which is funny but also makes the site useless as an indicator of what they really believe.

Re: America's conservatives, making the Bible better
No. It meant that at the time there was puritan thread in society, where the only book read, or thought worthwhile to read was the Bible. Other literature was not pursued, or was condemned as evil.

That would be interesting to see actually documented.
If they could read the Bible, they could read most other text, which would be a huge benefit to productivity in many fields of employment.

I doubt anyone is with the Latin version. "Kill them [all]! Surely the Lord discerns which [ones] are his".
I mention it as a predecessor to the Holy Roman Empire's ....holy war in Germany.
The Albigensian Crusade or Cathar Crusade (1209–1229). An estimated 200,000 to 1,000,000 people were massacred during the crusade. (in southern France).
