Russia’s Leaders See China as Template for Ruling
MOSCOW — Nearly two decades after the collapse of the Communist Party, Russia’s rulers have hit upon a model for future success: the Communist Party.
Or at least, the one that reigns next door.
Like an envious underachiever, Vladimir V. Putin’s party, United Russia, is increasingly examining how it can emulate the Chinese Communist Party, especially its skill in shepherding China through the financial crisis relatively unbowed.
United Russia’s leaders even convened a special meeting this month with senior Chinese Communist Party officials to hear firsthand how they wield power.
Ah well, the more things change, the more things stay the same.

China's been able to disprove that the pen is mightier than the sword. When the economic going gets tough, the tough get to cracking more whips on sweatshop labourers.

What smurf. It makes no sense at all.
Actually what's happened is layoffs for the first time in years, with those laid off "sweatshop labourers" protesting outside the factories, demanding their jobs back.

I might suggest that the free market absolutists around here might ponder their philosophy vis a vi China's growth and the USA's sluggish behavior.
Seems to indicate that "a plan" in better than our "no plan" approach.

Pariah, you're saying that the free market just never has a plan, which I don't think is correct. The issue comes from whether one person/groups makes the plan or a lot of different people/groups make plans and we see which one works out best.

There isn't much faith in either system. Rather, it's up to the people planning it to make sure it succeeds.
Both will have their stupid ideas and great ideas. It's a matter of human failings instead of "the entire system is broken."

Yeah, you're right. I was in the mood to make a sensational statement, I was bored. Sue me. 
And the riots of end of last year had actually made the news headlines as well; they were a bit hard to miss.
