Granted I would never take out a loan for something with those kind of miles. But that doesn't mean they can't won't be reliable. My friend has an 03 with >140k miles. If you replaced it's brakes, tires and checked it's oil, I would be confident in driving it across the country.

Both owners, my dad being one of them have babied the car a lot.The jag currently has 84k miles. He got it with 36k. The Nativa was sent to a junker at 120k miles. I guess the pricing is reasonable. It could, though, be a lemon.

For me to get into any car with less mileage would have run me more money than my bank was willing to give me.

My Ford Aspire had 230,000 miles on it when it finally died. My Tempo had 198,000. My goal with any vehicle is to get 250,000 out of it (roughly the distance to the moon).

I have a friend who had an Oldsmobile with over 500,000 miles(!) on it when he finally replaced it. The car he has now has over 300,000 on it.

I bought my car with relatively low mileage: but at 25k per year, it didn't stay that way for long.

Don't you live on Puerto Rico, gd? Are 60 mile commutes common there?

Re: Nervous! New Car.

Ford Aspire?

Ford Tempo?

You're talking about cars that were an affront to humanity. I'm surprised their motors didn't fall right out at the 100,000 mile mark. Compared to those crapwagons, the HHR is freaking Bentley.

Most late-model cars on dealer lots are former rental cars which the dealers purchase at wholesale auctions. You might think this is a bad thing, but it usually isn't: If that HHR was in a rental fleet, it will have had all its maintenance done on time, and it will have been cleaned a lot more often than most cars.

Some people care about low mileage, I'm not one of them.

Our vet just got a different truck last year, but stayed with a 1996 F150 because the vet box wouldn't fit into anything newer.  He got a good deal on one with heavier springs in the rear, with 130,000 miles.  Last time he was out, the odometer was 212,000 miles, and the thing still runs like new.  His last truck had 298,000 on it but the frame had started to rust through, so he had to replace it.  The engine ran like new yet.  Mileage is nothing anymore.  The I6 engine in my Wrangler can go well over 300,000 miles if you take care of it.  A guy I know around here has a '94 Grand Cherokee with the 318 V8 that is around 290,000.  He plans to put another 100k on there before he's done with it.  Maintenance is the key to keeping a vehicle for that long.

Hey, not so.  You can absolutely get an American-made diesel vehicle.  Any of various massively oversized pickup trucks, the Freightliner Custom Van (which are actually quite nice, designed by Mercedes), or just go all out and get yourself a Kentworth (9 MPG!).

Of course, keeping log books and trying to follow hours of service regulations might be a drawback if you go for the larger option.

Seriously, I'm hoping that the fallout of auto companies in the economic crunch will result in more European-styled competition, with the additions of Opel and Fiat to American car lots.  If you get those, one or two diesel models are bound to enter the lineup.

Edit: I've just forgotten that there's a new American regulation that requires some diesel vehicles to use an exhaust fluid, which exhaust gasses are passed through so that sulfuric emissions are eliminated.  This fluid is horrendously expensive and, just like the catalytic converter, doesn't live up to its design.

and it sounds like it restricts exhaust pressure which will lower the MPG.

Does anyone ever look at the environmental impact of the additional fuel used as a result of these smog gimmicks?

Re: Nervous! New Car.

No. Unless you tend to drive from Humacao to Arecibo and viceversa.

One of dads car had barely 6k miles on it when he bought it. The car only had 40 grand to pay for. The previous owner did not want anything for the car and dad continued paying for it. He pays $743 instead of the as new $1,699. Not sure why though. It is a red beauty of a car and after all dad has done to it, including a race at the local dragstrip the car has around 16K miles.

What's worse, and any truck driver will tell you this, the government is changing regulations on a yearly basis, without concern of what happens to the industry.  But, that's for another thread.

By the way, Pithecanthropus, did you get the 2.2 or the 2.4 liter engine? And is that photo you posted the actual car you now own, or one that just looks like it?

2.2 liter engine. And have been getting 27 mpg in the city, haven't driven it on the highway yet, but will this weekend.

Here's my car.

Re: Nervous! New Car.

I'm majorly bummed today. Missed out on a 2001 Chevy Prizm (basically identical to a Toyota Corolla) for $1000 on Craigslist. Reason given for why so cheap is that it had 194,000 miles and an oil leak (timing chain cover). Body and interior looked well above average. He didn't leave a time that was too early to call, only not to call after 10pm. Was too lazy to wake up early and see if it was still available. He email me back about noon and said it was gone.
cry

I don't need a second car but it would be very nice to have something economical like that!

Re: Nervous! New Car.

Mr. Reet, how did you do that!?

Gorgeous HHR, Java Man! The rental Cobalt I destroyed was equipped with the 2.2 liter engine, and it hauled ass, but only in a straight line. When I attempted to haul ass in a wide, sweeping curve, the cheap tires, soft suspension, and lack of electronic traction control facilitated my smacking both ends of the car into the same guard rail.

That is a bummer.

I wish the Geo Metro was still around. That would be perfect for my commute. My father in law did buy one used, and is fixing it up. He commutes every day in it. Yes, it sucks in just about every way conceivable, but you can practically drive across the state on a gallon of gas.
