Buying a modem

Right now i have a 2Wire router/modem (DSL) for my iMac, but it only has one plug for an ethernet cable. I'm going to need to get a new one that i can hook up both a PC and my iMac to. That's all they'll share, though. Just the connection. They aren't going to be sharing any files or iTunes libraries or printers.

Any suggestions?

Re: Buying a modem

Yeah. Just buy a router and connect that to your modem.

Re: Buying a modem

I would just recommend a 5-port switch instead of getting a new modem, works seamlessly with the modem.

Re: Buying a modem

Not a whole lot. Be careful when buying just a switch, though: if your DSL modem can't act as a router, there's a good chance things won't work.

Re: Buying a modem

You'll be fine with just a switch. Or a hub, even, if you can still find one, these days. Either one is fine, just buy the cheapest one. It's just a home network and you only need to get online with it.

according to http://www.dsldepot.com/dslmodem.asp?modem=94 it is a router ... so all you need is a switch.

Re: Buying a modem

I can't keep up with all this cross posting. wink

Buy this.

http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid … mp;cat=NET

It will auto-sense enough that you don't need to worry about crossover cables.

Plug an ethernet cable in between the roudem and the switch, then plug the computers into the switch's other ports.

It should "just work." Assuming you see blinkylights. (No lights, no signal.)

Try different cables first; if that doesn't work, replace the switch.

Re: Buying a modem

If something fails, I'm blaming the PC side right now.

I have a thing like the one in the link dv posted. Easy, works everytime, plug and play. Both internet and moving files back and forth.

The difference is that I'm connecting 2 Macs (OS X 10.4 and 10.6. Not a problem either)

Re: Buying a modem

I'd advise you to keep away from D-Link. Linksys is pretty reliable.

Re: Buying a modem

My favorite brand is the one I can easily afford to replace when necessary.
