Graphic Artist Rant
Holy smurf!
I'm all for helping my friend, upon the release of his latest album, to get the liner notes posted on his web site, so I asked him to put it together the way he wanted it to look in a Word document and that I would "translate" it into html.
He has stretched several of the pictures to fit what he wants it to look like, but when you take something that was originally 4.5 inches square and force it to become 4 x 6 you severely distort the image. People get tall and alien looking, spheres become oblong and everything looks just wrong.
Nothing screams "I don't know what the smurf I'm doing" like stretching images. It would be one thing if he was going for some sort of artistic "look," but I know that's not the case. He's just making it look like smurf because he doesn't know what he's doing.
(Don't even get me started about wondering how a 12 song CD could warrant 38 pages of liner notes!)
I refuse to distort images like that. He's not paying me, I'm doing this as a favor. If he wants distorted images he's going to have to find someone else.

Re: Graphic Artist Rant
As a graphic designer I can only offer you my sympathy.
The fact is, there are a ton of people who are blind to the nuance of a well-designed piece.
When they "own" the piece, some glaring errors or sloppiness just isn't apparent.
Now, if they were their own prospective client, that faulty design might not be something they consciously notice, but it gives off an air of incompetence.
Please don't tell me he wanted you to use Papyrus or Comic Sans.
38 pages of copy? Shheesh.
All I wanted was a Pepsi, just one Pepsi, and she wouldn't give it to me.

Doesn't sound like a Graphic Designer to me if he/she gave you a document in Word. We despise that program, and run away at the instant it is mentioned.

See this all the time.
Crop them. When he asks you what happened, explain while pulling your cheeks in opposite directions and use the words "silly putty." Gets 'em every time.

He's not a graphic designer, he's a piano player. To expect him to try to learn a layout program would be pointless and frustrating for both of us. That's why I told him to use Word.

Re: Graphic Artist Rant
I can sympathize. While I'm certainly not a graphic designer, my job sometimes has me getting photos of various parts of the plant, which are then put into a presentation, and then the aspect gets skewed. I'm also annoyed by the fact that they have a television set up as a virtual corkboard and it plays presentations all day, except for the fact that the computer that the television is hooked up to has the wrong resolution and thus EVERYTHING has a skewed aspect ratio. All of these things just make me want to hurry up and get published so I can live like Stephen King (and change my sig).

I'm the designer, he's the guy who has a project.
Latest development is that toward the end he gets sloppy. In the first pages, photos are centered, aligned left, aligned right -- it actually looks pretty good, but near the end everything is centered with no variation.
I am going to keep all the pictures in their original ratios and see if he even notices.

It's not about being judgemental per se BUT
When you are hiring a designer, aesthetic judgment IS part of what you are paying for.
The fact is, a seasoned designer is simply going to look at things with more seasoned eyes and experience.
The non-designer often suffers from not seeing the full picture, or context, or the underlying qualities that separates "ok" design from "good" or even "great" design.
It goes beyond just taste.
Many clients get locked into one idea (often the first one they dream up). Many of these same clients are not seeing possible minefields ahead, or are simply re-doing a cliche or even a stolen concept.

Now THAT is exactly why you have to be detailed and careful on the wording of what a job cost covers, when you're submitting that to the client. A lot of clients will assume that they can hand you something, have you work on it, and then re-do certain elements of the project if they hand you a "better & revised" concept, ...and that you'll do this extra re-work at no charge. It don't work that way.

Regarding "Why be judgmental?"
Well, maybe Pithecanthropus might want to actually get paid for doing Web design some day. Maybe, therefore, he doesn't want something to be out there, looking like crap, if it's going to have his name on it.
