PS3 to DVI...oh the horrors...thanks for nothing Sony!

Just a FYI thread for those of you who may be purchasing a PS3 in the coming months due to the recent price drop.

If you wish to play through your DVI monitor via your HDMI port on the PS3, you need a HDCP display or an adapter. Thank Sony for supporting stupid DRM techniques. From what I have read the plain PS3 to VGA cables give washed out looks with poor contrast.

From my digging today I did find the HDfury adapter and I got one on order. It sorta hacks the signal so the PS3 thinks its connected to a HDCP source. Unfortunately it seems to only output to VGA and you have to have a DVI plug in first. Thankfully HDMI to DVI cables are pretty cheap on amazon.

The adapter itself i've found to range from $57-$100+. Expensive, but cheaper than buying a new monitor.

I'll post back later once it arrives to see how it works. The place I got it from has a good return policy so no worries. Worst case scenario...it bombs and I get refund then wait till Christmas and look for good deals on cheap LCD monitors with HDCP.

AFAIK, HDMI spec requires support for HDCP. So it's not really Sony's fault per se.

Ya its just not covered when you goto purchase a cable or adapter. I think my monitor was 1 gen too old too cause the new ones coming in at the time I think had an HDMI input. Guess I should have picked the new but I just didn't see ever needing the HDMI back then.

I think that's a gamma and/or brightness calibration issue. The latter was finally addressed on the 360 when a firmware Update brought in the 3 way adjustment (Reference Levels- Std/ Intermediate/ Expanded); the latter you can cover if your monitor has a gamma adjustment on the chosen input channel. Mine doesn't, unfortunately. (~2.2 is about right, or a Superbright/ Theater mode if one's available).

I'd venture to guess that most folks are going to be connecting to TVs rather than monitors, but that line seems to be blurring. Though I wonder how long before we see the adapters that will allow you to connect a PS3 to one of the new iMacs.

Mini-DP is HDCP compliant so I don't see what would stop it.

Aye, HDCP is standard for HDMI, and in a way it protects customers too, means it's HDMI compliant and you're actually viewing the "hi-def" that you thought you bought, ignoring that computer resolutions have been higher for a long time of course.

Well HDfury came today. Hooked it up and so far it works nice. Only could do 720p so its not as good of a rez as on my 360. But it works.
