Apple Releases Magic Mouse
Apple Releases Magic Mouse
October 21, 2009 10:12 PM
Apple releases Magic Mouse with Multi-touch:
Magic Mouse — with its low-profile design and seamless top shell — is so sleek and dramatically different, it brings a whole new feel to the way you get around on your Mac. You can’t help but marvel at its smooth, buttonless appearance. Then you touch it and instantly appreciate how good it feels in your hand. But it’s when you start using Magic Mouse that everything comes together.
The Multi-Touch area covers the top surface of Magic Mouse, and the mouse itself is the button. Scroll in any direction with one finger, swipe through web pages and photos with two, and click and double-click anywhere. Inside Magic Mouse is a chip that tells it exactly what you want to do. Which means Magic Mouse won’t confuse a scroll with a swipe. It even knows when you’re just resting your hand on it.

Re: Apple Releases Magic Mouse
I would just like to hear a review from some mag. Is it really better than the craptastic mighty mouse or just as crapatastic?

Macworld's got a first-look review, with a proper review apparently to follow: http://www.macworld.com/article/143410/ … mouse.html

Re: Apple Releases Magic Mouse
I sure hope it works better than the "Mighty Mouse" or whatever Apple now calls it. That's what I currently use. When the battery gets about 1/2 used up it starts to loose itself occasionally and the scroll ball hasn't worked in months. I ordered one on line from Apple, but, it won't ship until the end of October.

Re: Apple Releases Magic Mouse
I think Apple listens in on my conversations because just last month I was discussing with someone who just purchased an iMac that I'd love to get a desktop but I'm to addicted to the touch pad my MBP has & using a mouse feels awkward. Well now that thats settled I guess I better pull out the savings jar and get a saving.

Re: Apple Releases Magic Mouse
I recently replaced my Mighty Mouse with a Logitech LX3 Optical Mouse, mainly because I needed a scrollwheel that actually worked. Overall, it's a far smoother device.

The Microsoft Trackball Explorer is still my hands down favorite mouse. They don't make it anymore. How the hell do you get this now?

Re: Apple Releases Magic Mouse
wow, such an expensive mouse, yet so tempting cause it's so precise, comfortable, and exact in operation! The thing I love about it the most is you aren't sliding your hand all over a desktop, just rolling two fingers and clicking with "surgical" precision and efficiency of movement. Does the Magic Mouse work that way, just like a trackpad instead of sliding the pointer all over your desk? If so, that is its greatest strength. If not, then it's lame.

Go to the apple store and find out. Bring your favorite mousepad, if you use one.

Re: Apple Releases Magic Mouse
Nah, not making a trip out for that purpose. Just watched the Magic Mouse video, and it's sitting squarely in the "lame" category. Too bad, since the surface is a multi-touch capable device but it isn't programmed to MOVE THE POINTER. It's Trackball vs. Mouse, and there is still a distinction. Apple should release an input device that really revolutionizes mousing. This one isn't it.

no I wanted Apple's multi touch click/tap/swipe/pinch/rotate all in one smooth surface trackpad, and i havn't tried the magic mouse yet but it looks like it will deliver.

If not, there's always the iTablet. Oops. That's vapourware.

I think knobtwirler has historically proven he is one of the harder members to satisfy in terms of what hardware he finds acceptable. Still I reserve my opinion on the mouse until I try it. My big concern is I'm a heavy middle click user and it looks like that doesn't work now. If that does it'll suck for me.

Re: Apple Releases Magic Mouse
Gimmie a way to plug it in and i'd consider it. Until self recharging batteries are in everything, no way you can convince me a wireless is better than wired in the long run. Batteries run out, die, and need charging. Even if it lasts days on a charge, its always when you need it that it dies. Then theres also considerations on the wireless transmitter/etc. I've seen plenty of those die before in other devices.
This just seems like an expensive toy that will garner rave reviews at first...millions will buy them...then millions will hate them later. Someone please stop Apple from trying to reinvent things that aren't broken. The R&D costs from things like this would be better spent elsewhere...like I dunno...a $1-2k non server processor based tower that is just as upgradeable?
...or at least some new case designs

I remember using a mouse like that, at my local library, my thumb really started to hurt after only 5 minutes of rolling the ball around.

I finf it very attractive and interesting, but I really think that at this price point, they could have it recharge over usb. The battery would be lighter, and you won't risk dead mouse during before deadline.

Only if its an Xbox 360 style plug and charge option. Charging docks are a joke. Half the the people I've know who've had them forgot to return the mouse to the dock and you cant really use then while they're there (read dead mouse during before deadline). If you have the replacements ready, replaceable batteries really are a faster option. Then again I can name a lot of people who don't always have the replacements ready (read dead mouse during before deadline).

Blah, just saw a review and it lack 3 & 4 finger swipe recognition and doesn't have the 2 finger pinch/zoom/rotate functions either. I guess it's a step in the right direction but I'll wait until a fully functional multi-touch trackpad is released from them before I get a desktop. Damn you Apple for making me so addicted to your built in trackpad!

Re: Apple Releases Magic Mouse
Really? I think the new all in one trackpads on the new laptops suck and are a pain in the ass; much prefer to have the button(s) separate. Not to mention you can't disable them when a external USB mouse is plugged in.

Re: Apple Releases Magic Mouse
Wireless mouse and KB never made much sense to me on the desktop. I have never found the wires a problem. Wireless just seems to introduce more complication and thus, more opportunities for failure.
Over all I have low expectations for the new mouse. Apple has a ten year tradition of making bad ones. I think with mouses and KB Apple's tendency of putting form over function makes them produce interesting products that are lousy to use.

I will defend the aluminum keyboard (full size with numeric keypad). It is quite nice and I actually prefer it over the traditional push button styles.
